Here's a guy who deserves his own thread. I think I recall T.H. being a pretty big fan, right?

He's got some loose Leone ties that I can think of. Morricone did the score for The Thing. Lee Van Queef was in Escape from New York.

Three of his films are coming new to Blu-Ray this summer: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=23103

In typical PowerRR fashion of course this post will come with a list as well.

1. Starman - 10
2. They Live - 9
3. In the Mouth of Madness - 9
4. Halloween - 8
5. Big Trouble in Little China - 8
6. Escape from New York - 8
7. Christine - 7
8. The Fog - 7
9. The Thing - 6

Haven't Seen:

Dark Star
Assault on Precinct 13
Someone's Watching Me!
Elvis
Prince of Darkness
Memoirs of an Invisible Man
Village of the Damned
Escape from L.A.
Vampires
Ghosts of Mars
The Ward

Any recommendations of what to watch next?

I've got a weird taste in Carpenter films. I like all of them. But I find The Thing, generally considered his best, to be pretty bland (other than the effects). Fucking love Starman. One of my favorite movies.

The Thing is much, much better than Halloween.
I haven’t seen a lot of his films. I don’t have great memories of Assault on Precinct 13 but it has that small touch of Carpenter magic that makes the viewer feel at home.

He knows how to frame for 'scope, that's the main thing.

One of the best to ever do it. It seems you already seen most of what needs to be seen from Carpenters filmography. I have a great appreciation for Assault on Precinct 13 just because of how he managed to get so much out of a small budget but also for that Ice Cream scene. I remember watching it and just not believing that it happened. Also, the character Napoleon Wilson has a couple lines taken from OUATITW and Carpenter's input in the interviews for special feature in OUATITW is always great, especially when the topic of politics came up and he just said something along the lines that "Maybe but then there can be politics in Plan 9 From Outer Space."

Absolutely! You have said the Thing That Is True. Poor Kim Richards! Has me laughing my royal Irish ass off (and I ain't Irish) every time I see it.

The Thing 12/10
Escape From New York 11/10
Big Trouble in Little China 10/10
Assault on Precinct 13 10/10
Halloween 10/10
They Live 10/10
The Fog 8/10
Prince of Darkness 7.5/10
Starman 7.5/10

It’s been too long since I’ve last seen In the Mouth of Madness but that would round out my top 10.

When was the last time you saw The Thing? That's like one of the greatest movies ever to me.

Don't talk about his Leone ties. His commentary bits on OUATITW are laughingly awful http://www.fistful-of-leone.com/forums/index.php?topic=11263.msg156276#msg156276

Interesting director, but not a fascinating one. Many of his "classics" were less good than expected.

About an hour before I made this thread - I rewatched it because I'd loved a few Carpenter films recently and realized I should give it another shot. I like it. It's pretty good. But I think it's the colorful, silly quality of a lot of Carpenter's movies that I love. The Thing is much darker visually and tonally. Nothing character or story related really grabs my attention in it until shit starts hitting the fan with crazy effects and body explosions toward the end.

Help me live a little more, I'm expecting good news.

And here it is:
Quote
Deaf Crocodile is currently working on a new restoration of John Carpenter's explosive 1976 urban action classic Assault on Precinct 13 in collaboration with the film's executive producer Joseph Kaufman. Utilizing the original 35mm camera negative and sound elements, this pristine and painstaking restoration will be the first-ever 4K version of the film available, slated for a special theatrical only re-release in early 2022 following its festival premiere.

Nice. That's a JC movie I liked a lot when I caught it 15 years ago on TV.
