Here is a good example of why a lot of post Hayes Office Hollywood Westerns were a little bland. Now how many of these did Leone and the Spaghetti Westerns break, lol.
Gene Autry's Cowboy Commandments 1939
1. The Cowboy must never shoot first, hit a smaller
man,or take unfair advantage.
2. He must never go back on his word, or a trust
confided in him.
3. He must always tell the truth.
4. He must be gentle with children, the elderly and
animals.
5. He must not advocate or possess racially or
religiously intolerant ideas.
6. He must help people in distress.
7. He must be a good worker.
8. He must keep himself clean in thought, speech,
action, and personal habits.
9. He must respect women, parents, and his nations
laws.
10. The Cowboy is a patriot

Well, let's just look at Joe/Manco/Blondie's record -
1. He always shot first. That was the point. He hit Colonel Mortimer, who was not smaller, but older. And as for unfair advantage, bullet proof vest?
2. Let's see - Tuco, Angeleyes, Mortimer, El Indio's gang, the Baxters, the Rojos. He betrayed them all and didn't even think twice.
3. See 2
4. Children - The kid outside the hotel in FAFDM. Elderly -The guy whose room he took. Mind you he was good with animals, the cat in GBU, and of course his beloved mule.
5. He wasn't prejudiced. Strange this was in the list, given that John Wayne was such a bigot.
6. Yeah, so long it's not too out of his way.
7. "You - dig"
8. Hmmm. He didn't really speak often enough for us to know if he was clean in speech. But I doubt his personal hygiene was that good.
9. Women - well he never shot any, but he never raised his hat either. Parents - who knows? Nations laws - Erm. No.
10. He obviously didn't give a damn, especially given his uniform swapping for his own gain antics during the Civil War.
I make that 1 and 5/6ths out of 10.
It's class.

It's excellent; if you have other thing like this...

i forgot all about gene's comandments !
once, when joe knocked out marasol by mistake he showed
great concern for her swift recovery.
joe gave lil jesus' family $$$ AND advice to leave town.
as blondie . he left tuco's share of the money. he could have easily taken it.
clint was dealing with a whole new type of bad guy. his best defense was a good offence. cj, thanks for posting gene's comandments and special thanks to REDYRED.

That's a great point! I think you cannot separate the antihero from his villain. Without him the antihero would have no use for his special personality... and there would be no story, or at least no
good
story.
There are two kinds of films in this world:those which stay, even when their genre is forgotten, and those which don't.

I seem to remember somebody posting this same topic up on the general discussion section and CJ got into a bit of a heated arguement with the OP.
It was posted a year ago if I remember correctly and the guy who made the thread was one of those "post twice and take flight" sorta characters.
