I'm sure there are a lot less today than their used to be, I'm pretty sure ghost towns here in the US are attributed to the gold rush, when a mine runs dry the town did too and they virtually left it intact when they all bolted. But yes there have always been ghost towns popping up and going ghost for one reason or another.

Gotta bring the attention to a reaaaally impressive ghost town in Turkey. In the beginning of last century there was a Turkish-Greek "exchange" of minorities (simply and very reductionistic put), and so a whole town of greek minority was deserted - somewhere near the Turkish South Coast -  don't remember where exactly.

Myself and two friends spent the the night in the deserted church, with 200 candles, a guitar, booze and a little weed. It was a hot, clear night and the stars were just so damn clear.

The next morning we were awaken way too early by a couple of tourist coaches jammed with elderly Americans - looking like they came fresh off some Mediterranean cruise ship - I don't think they approved of us being there, looking like zombies with empty bottles all over the place.

It was a night to remember in a Turkish ghost town.

Thanks for the great pics, Cigar Joe! I'd like to visit Virginia City. Have you been to any ghost town in California?

Actually I'm ashamed to say I never made it to California or the Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, Utah) when I lived in Montana, was in New Mexico though

I've been to all the Southwest states, but only once in my entire life.

That's fantastic! You can shoot a SW film right away. Hey, what are you waiting for!?

Well, I don't have a camera. One of my friends has a camera (look forward to his twenty-minute short film A Call to Apathy that I will post here as soon as it is online), but I don't know if I could convince both him and some actors to drive a couple hours to shoot a spag. Also, there are a lot of visitors there sometimes, so there are ATVs driving around in the background. But, that won't be a problem if we don't record any sound on the set, and just work around those ATVs. Still, might be hard to convince him.

If visitors are not so much of a problem, come up with a good short story. If it's a good exciting story, it might not be so difficult to attract your friend. Or save up money so that you can buy your own digital camcorder. If you want to make a SW, you have a great location not too far from you.

I'd kill for a location like that Silenzio. For you to pass up such an oppertunity just because of a few hours drive is utterly ridiculous (That's if you want to make a short film I mean).
