Well, in fact he writes on page 11 of this book that it took him "quite some time before he became a Leone admirer", since he was not impressed by FOD and FFDM. Things changed with GBU, so in fact we are talking about 3 years approx., which in my opinion is not a very long time.
Furthermore, the second book on Leone written by an Italian and published in Italy was De Fornari's book in 1977 ("Sergio Leone", Moizzi Ed.); before that we only had Franco Ferrini's book dated 1971 ("L'antiwestern e il caso Leone", ed. Bianco e Nero). Normally one doesn't write a book about a director unless he likes the guy.
So what I was trying to say was that De Fornari maybe wasn't as fast as Ferrini, but certainly he was much faster to appreciate Leone's work than T. Kezich, Grazzini, Claudio G. Fava and many other film critics in Italy,  who only after OUTIA "suddenly" started realizing that Leone was indeed a great director.

I have an German edition from 1984.
It was my first book about the Sergio, and actually I had hoped for more. The chapters about the films were not that interesting. But some of the other stuff (interviews etc.) was ok. Unlike Frayling's books I rarely grabbed it from the shelf in the last 20 years.

Of course this is a new edition, and maybe he changed a lot since then, but maybe this book is still not that "tutto".

Your german edition is (presumably: but I'm 99% certain) the translation of a later De Fornari's book. I'm talking about the 1977 book. I read it, of course, when it came out and I seem to remember that in that book the author considered L. as a good practitioner, certainly not a great director: if only because  he was not doing artistic movies but commercial ones. I was asking my countryman if I remember well without having to check the book myself.

Yes, many years ago and I still have it. I do not remember exactly what you state, but I will check. In any case, I still think that nobody writes a book about a movie director unless he likes him and his style...and De Fornari wrote at least 3 books on SL...

Oooops - one caption on that web page states "In the station shootout with Harmonica (featuring, at top, Jack Elam, Lionel Stander and Woody Strode), careful blocking and expert use of closeups are combined with deft editing — by Nino Baragli — to result in a classic scene".  All of us know it was Al Mulloch, and Lionel Stander was barkeep of the tavern.
