This one ('98 cut) gets better on repeated views, and is sort of the big sendoff to the unofficial classic noir genre. Outside of The Killing, I don't know if there's a more modern feeling movie from the 50's.

Try these for a comparison.

Murder by Contract (1958)
Cry Terror! (1958)
Lineup (The) (1958)
Stakeout On Dope Street (1958)
Odds Against Tomorrow (1959)
Crimson Kimono (The) (1959)

I've been meaning to see Stakeout and Cry Terror for a while now. I've seen the others years ago. I'm a big fan of Odds Against Tomorrow, The Lineup and Murder By Contract.

Brilliant photography and an excellent score from Henry Mancini (which his opening theme should play in the opening scene in the '98 cut) with some really wonderful locales like downtown Venice CA circa 1958 that makes for a beautiful border town. Give me this over Kane any day. A+
Which is your preferred AR for this?

Outside of exceptions like Shane where the Academy ratio is clearly the way to go, I would always prefer widescreen. I don't know if I'm right though. It's been a decade (or close it) since I've last seen it. I bought the bluray 6 years ago and just got around to watching my copy.
