I've been dreading this day for a long time, but I'm glad that he made it past 90. The greatest of all-time, and I don't say that lightly as Morricone is the only composer that should be mentioned in the same tier as Bernard Herrmann. Not trying to take a shot at Williams, Nino Rota, Tiomkin etc.

I know that Morricone was annoyed about how much praise his western scores received compared to his other work, but I can't help but thinking that most of his best non Leone work was in the spaghetti subgenre, at least for my music taste:

The first 5 or 6 albums I ever owned (and listened on repeat) were his.
Seeing him on stage 3 times was magical.
More importantly, I don't think I would be a filmmaker today if it wasn't for Ennio Morricone and his OUATITW score. I was struck by the movie when I first saw it, but it was the fact that I kept humming the score for weeks that made it so haunting (and prompted so many discussions with other people).

For the record, Return of the Seven by Elmer Bernstein was the second (Magnificent Seven soundtrack was never issued until CD days).

Actually, outside of Leone, his other greatest partnership must have been with Giuseppe Tornatore.

At least the Morricone documentary by Tornatore should finally be released this year:

I was also fortunate enough to see him in concert once. Absolutely spellbinding. It feels like this is the end of an era.

Drink and I had tickets to see him a few years ago and then he fell off the podium at a concert and cancelled the rest of the tour. At the time I wondered if I'd get another chance to see him--and now I know. I still have the ticket, though. It will be a marker for that which we wish for and can never have.

I wasn't talking about director partnerships though -- and I would take Morricone's non Leone spaghetti work over this Tornatore stuff in a second, even if that's the second best partnership. But it's such a distant second that I don't think that it means a whole lot.

Wow! I couldn't disagree more. Some of his best work has been for Tornatore. I don't think it's a coincidence that his two closest partnerships resulted in his best work either.
