The joy of loving is to live in a world of Mandom

noodles would have eventually made this thread anyway, I'm just beating him to it.

Damien Chazellle?s new movie stunned L.A. moviegoers last night. I?m hearing the word ?masterpiece? being uttered a few times this morning.

Judging by some of the reactions gathered from last night?s screening of Chazelle?s ?Babylon,? this is going to be the writer-director?s go-for-broke epic. Scorsese?s ?The Wolf of Wall Street? was mentioned more than a few times, ditto Fellini?s ?Satyricon.?

The film, which clocks in at 185 minutes, is said to take place between 1925 and 1952, tackling Hollywood?s wobbly transition from the silent era to sound. Margot Robbie?s performance as Clara Bow is said to be the big takeaway & a likely Best Actress contender. Jean Smart also registered major points as a showbiz journalist who helps Bow learn to act with spoken words.

I won?t say more about the film, but that it does pull off the kind of surprising opening credits that would make Hamaguchi blush, not to mention its shades of ?Eyes Wide Shut? orgy debauchery. I?m telling you, this is Chazelle swinging for the fences and trying to rile up the dead horse that is American cinema?s current state.

I can?t wait for this one.

I probably would, but I wasn't too hyped yet. I am now! Thanks, you're better at doing Chazelle's propaganda than I am.

We?ll edit it out in post.

People in Hollywood in the 1920s talked like that? John Gilbert talked like that?

A trailer that has strong Wolf of Wall Street vibes. Let's hope Babylon pulls up a Goodfellas and takes a darker turn for its second half. That movie is now walking a tight rope and could fall either on the Casino side of it... or on the The Great Gatsby (2013) one.

If you think it has the potential to be anything remotely close to Goodfellas or Casino I got some really bad news for you. I really dislike the look of it, it's very digital looking and doesn't feel or look like the roaring 20's at all.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre..

Goodfellas or Casino is an incredible standard, if it does come remotely close that would be incredible, for sure. That being said I haven't checked but I'd be extremely surprised if it was shot digital, though. Chazelle even got Netflix to accept the 2 tv show episodes he directed being shot on film (16mm i think), which is the only exception to the Netflix "everything must be shot digitally and HDR compatible" rule.

My predictions:
noodles_leone is gonna love it.

JenkinsRR, on the other hand, is going to hate it twice.

I'm actually starting to think I won't like it. I'll be there day 1 of course, because I love seeing massive movies like this in theater and I've loved Chazelle's work so far.

But it looks so manufactured and way too silly. Almost like a Target-commercial version of The Wolf of Wall Street meets Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Though I think the mixed reviews are exciting me more than 10/10s across the board.

At this point we need everyone in this thread to rate Chazelle's previous work. His 3 features are pretty close for me so if you ask me tomorrow I might have a different answer, but here is the current state of affair:

Whiplash - 8/10
Lalaland - 8.5/10
First Man - 7.5/10
Those 2 episodes from that one Netflix show - 5.5/10

PowerRR's Rankings:

1. La La Land
2. Whiplash
3. First Man
4. Guy and Madeleine on a Park Bench
5. Those 2 episodes from that one Netflix show
6. That iPhone commercial

1 through 3 are 8ish. 4 is a nice starter movie 6/10. His Netflix episodes are decent but the whole miniseries sucked. iPhone commercial is lame.

I want to see Chazelle make a great movie of his own. He is king derivative (a VERY good copy-cat though) but I'm still holding out hope that he'll make his first real movie soon. Unfortunately, with Babylon it looks like he's taking his PTA form again.

TH's Rankings:

worst "director" ever

1. Those 2 episodes from that one netflix show - best cinema in years
2. Guy and Madeleine - cassavettes ripoff!
3. First Man - more expensive, bullshit hollywood cassavettes ripoff!
4. La La Land - PTA ripoff, but at least a ripoff from before PTA fucking sucked!
5. That iPhone commercial - better than Whiplash
6. Whiplash - SUCKS. DUMB.

DJ's rankings:

1. La La Land - movie is a 0 but blu transfer is 100000
2. Whiplash - movie is negative 15 but blu transfer is 1535
3. guy and madeline - only on dvd, waiting for blu transfer
4. First Man - I own the 4K UHD blu but don't have a player
5. Those 2 episodes from that one Netflix show - I don't stream! waiting for critierion blu!
6. That iPhone commercial - what's an iphone?

That iPhone commercial does suck. But then you have to include Whiplash: the short movie into your ranking system. I'd put #5, right under the show and right above the ad. Haven't seen Guy and Madeleine.
