Why in the second to final scene (i think,) where ramon is burning down the baxter's house, do they not go out the back door after seeing some mates die?  Coming out before armed and ready when they hear all the commotion, or even try and stop the wagon when it gets to a stand still?  This scene confused me, i know its a story and all, but you would have thought they would have had the sense to come out and at least fight, properly.

it was a facade so they couldn't go out the back or it would ruin it for his audience (we would see it wasn't a really house and it was all make believe)... [this is intended as a joke-hee hee].
i have had the same question...and i don't have a very good answer other than, did you ever play cowboys and indians as a child (i did )? when you were making your last stand no matter how audacious, did you ever coward and ran out the back, all the way home to mommy. of course not because you knew even if you were to be slaughtered there was always tomorrow to get your vengence. leone loved playing cowboys and indians and would it be any fun to have his action figures run out the back? that is the best i can do!
