Does anyone know why his gang waited 18 mths before springing Indio from Jail ???
It only took Manco a few hours to spring Sancho Perez or ...."To arrange for his release.....naturally"

Maybe they scattered, maybe Groggy liked being boss, maybe some of the rest were also in jails somewhere, it could be various reasons. The Jail looked pretty formidible, maybe they needed to turn an inside man before they could get it the gate to spring Indio. This part you can fill in by speculation, not everything has to be spelled out.

maybe indio's gang just wasn't too "swift" without their leader.  else, why did they empty their revolvers trying to get that safe open  the carpenter built ?

manco, on the other hand traveled alone i.e. until mortimer showed up.

I've got to go with Kermit's theory.  Groggy was the clever #2 man, but wasn't he like a Prodigal Son type who finally showed up after Indio was sprung?  If Groggy wasn't around I think by default that would leave The Hunchback in charge of things.  Hence no master plan of escape forthcoming while the gears slowly turn.

Re no execution - Indio was like the Pablo Escobar of his times, a criminal god amongst men.  He was probably living large in prison, shaving garlic with a razor to make his salsa, savoring 100% agave tequilas with the carpenter and so on.  As long as his cash held out it would behoove his captors to keep him alive.

There's also the matter of the carpenter. Maybe it took Indio 18 months for him to win the guy's confidence. Only when he'd gotten the whole story did he tell his gang to spring him.

Actually, it appeared from the jail scene (addressing the General's point) that Nino was in charge of the gang which sprung Indio, not Wild.
