Quote
I think when QT or other cool filmmakers say "Spaghetti Western" there talking about a camera, character and story style more than about a production reality.

That's exactly the problem, if its not a certain percentage wise shot in Almeria, it won't have that Spaghetti Western look which would be a big influence on the film, your extras will have that SW look your sets will have that SW light and look. It's going to need that production reality and it will have to have a great story preferably with out a predictable ending. A style will have to be the provence of what ever director attemps the film.

You can take the Western back out of Almeria but you can't take Almeria completely out of a Euro/Spaghetti Western.

Almeria is the touchstone that must be tapped.

The thing is, is you can digitally create Ameira feel anywhere these days.   The look of the extras can be achieved by someone with a good eye.   The extras in other Spaghetti Westerns didn't match Leone's because the other directors didn't have his eye, his camera or his perfectionism.

I'm gonna have to say Tarantino is closer to Leone than Rodriguez.  Although I love the El Mariachi trilogy, I think the Kill Bill's have got more influences of Leone.  Especially Volume 2.

I think they're both heavily influenced.   Rodriguez has a Leone-esque love of gadgets - cool guns, etc.  And shares Leone's eye for extra's.

Tarantino has a Leone-esque camera and sense of timing.

Excellent point.  Besides Leone, I did watch Sabata the other day.  I pretty sure that was the one where at the end the guy is playing his banjo or guitar, I can't remember and he shoots out the end of it at the frets.  It shows where Rodriguez gets his guitar gadget mentality from.   8)

Well well, interesting contribution Cigar Joe. So this italian movie from the 70's "Quel Maledetto Treno Blindatto" was even called "Inglourious bastards" on the US. According to IMDB the script is the same.

Can anyone tell me what  "Agua Caliente" is? It comes in one of Leone's films (I think For a Few Dollars More) and is also the name of the street in El Paso where the massacre in Kill Bill takes place.

Also, Tarantino has made various references to Leone and inspires to be like him, trying to make every scene perfect. He has said that Inglorious Bastards will be his Spaghetti Western. He wants it to be what GBU was to the Civil War, I can't wait!!

Tell you what. The truth is... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.

I know I've been making a lot of topics recently...and if it annoys anybody let me know and I'll slow down :)

Anyway, I have two questions:

1.  Did you discover Leone through Tarantino?  (I'll admit it, I did)

2.  What's your favorite Tarantino flick?  (for me it's Pulp Fiction....Reservoir Dogs was too much talk, Kill Bill was too cartoony/silly/crappy dialogue, and Jackie Brown was just so, so)

Actually, if it weren't for Tarantino, I would not be into film. Pulp Fiction was the movie that got me into movies when I first saw it a year ago. For a long time it was my favorite movie. It kind of has sentimental value so it and Reservoir Dogs are still on my top 15.

Actually, you can pretty much somehow trace every movie on my top 15 back to Pulp Fiction as to how i discovered it (with the exception of the Godfather.) He really was how I discovered Leone, Leone helped me discover Kurosawa, et cetera.

1. No. Back to the Future Part II first made me want to see the rest of that movie Biff was watching in his hot-tub.

2. Pretty close between Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I'll go with Reservoir Dogs, if only becasue I saw it first and I'm usually sentemential when picking favorites among great films. Didn't care too much for the Kill Bill's (Vol. 2 was okay) and never finished Jackie Brown. Ugh, from what I saw of that one it was boring as hell. Did I miss anything from anyone who's seen it?

I like him. Even though he's 1,000,000,000 to the thirteenth power times inferior to Leone (but that's still pretty good.)
