Why did Manco give the colonel his own gun at the final shoot out with Indio when the colonel could have picked up his own gun and used that...assuming it wasn''t damaged

I''''d have to go with the damage assumption. If it was shot out of his hand its likely damaged somewhere or full of sand or dirt, it wouldn''''t be a good time to find out if such was the case, so take the offer.

You''''d probably want to carefully look it over and opperate all its parts, even then you may not be able to tell if the barrel got bent just enough to screw you over. It would be the job of a gunsmith to really check it out.

Since Mortimer wasn''t shot, I''d have to agree that Indio''s shot struck Mortimer''s firearm, so I''d assume there would be a chance of damage to it, like Cigar states.

i don't think a buntline special is the best gun you can have for a quick draw...

I have to disagree with derringdo about the Colonels main weapon not being a 'Buntline'. I'm not a big enough gun expert to tell whether the weapon used by the Colonel in the movie is a Colt produced Buntline, but a 'revolver carbine' very similar to it with a long 10 inch barrel was manufactured. There were also 12 inch and 16 inch versions (you see the Colonel's 16 inch a couple of times in the movie).  The only real difference between the Colonel's gun & the real Buntlines was the custom wooden stock - the real stock was a less attractive triangular metal design.

In terms of it not 'the best gun you can have for a quick draw' read this excerpt from 'Guns & Ammo' by Jeff Morey.....
"While a 12-inch-barreled Colt is cumbersome, one with a 10-inch barrel is remarkably comfortable to carry and shoot. Indeed, of the Revolver-Carbine sizes sold, the 10-inch is the size most conductive to being used as a sidearm and, when attached to its shoulder stock, a long-range "brush-popper."

indio had the upper hand at this stage of the contest.   criteria etiquette NOT to even entertain the thought of  going for the  now damaged firearm laying, laying down in the dirt.  at this stage of the game any sudden movement by mortimer could be construed by indio as a play. manco offers the use of his .45 with out putting indio on the defence thus keeping things fair.

i'm not really adding anthing c/j or derringdo have already put forth. in fact, i'm having a little trouble WITH my adding

I myself think that Manco wants to see if The Colonel can cut it in a real gunfight where he's actually in range of his opponents weapon. The whole idea of the speciality weapons was taken much further in 'Sabata' where Van Cleef uses weird and wonderful firearms and his sidekick 'Banjo' has a gun disguised as a banjo!.

Dont think indio would have "played" with the winchester pointing at him. Surely mortimer could have checked his gun while manco covered Indio..unless he wanted to prove he could hack it with any weapon

Where  can I buy a gun like this with the wooden  stock?
A working gun would be best, a replica would be ok.
I have a friend that looks just like the Colonel and I think he needs this gun!

here is the site for the gun...
http://www.impactguns.com/store/coltwestern.html

Now I have seen the stock attachment in Cabellas, they screw on any of the old type revolvers.

I agree with noodlesleone but the gun probably would have smashed when it was shot out of his hand,

His gun hung in a different place than his for a real fair duel.
in a duel Clint's gun hang was faster than the Colonel's
