As I have become a regular visitor of to this site, I wonder more and more if it would be a good idea to have a permanent thread named "All time Spaghetti western Top 30". People could vote, choosing from a list of about 100 titles. I think this would help greatly in pointing new fans to the ones to get and the ones not to get. So, webmaster, and others for that matter, what do y'all think?

In random order, I would at least like to see the following spags in the Top30:

FOD, FOFDM, GBU, OUATITW, Django, A Bullet for the general, the Trinity duo, companeros, cemerary without crosses, the ringo's, stranger in town, the stranger returns, death rides a horse, the big gundown, the big silence, the mercenary, keoma, mannaja, django kill, viva django, day of anger, my name is nobody, requiescant, face to face, sabata, sartana.

I hope more of you share my few and a top XX wil soon be part of this site!

I'm riding off into the sunset...........creating a long shadow.......

Wouldn't be a bad idea, I sort of got a running Leone Lover's Guide but its just that SW's that don't stray far from Leone.

That makes more than 30 already. There is a Top 20 list at Sartana Homestead (http://www.sartana.homestead.com/Top20.html) .

1. The Big Gundown 183
2. The Great Silence 162
3. Django 139
4. Death Rides a Horse 127
5. Face to face 99
6. A Bullet for the General 88
7. Sabata 82
8. Navajo Joe 71
9. Django Kill.. 70
10. Companeros 67
11. Day of Anger 63
12  Keoma
 The Mercenary 62
14. Return of Ringo 61
15. If You Meet Sartana....Pray for Your Death 55
16. Run, Man, Run 44
17. Cemetary Without Crosses 41
18. Any Gun Can Play 40
19. The Price of Power
   The Hellbenders 37

Add to these:
A Pistol for Ringo
They call Me Trinity
Tepepa
Sartana the Gravedigger
The Bounty Killer

and then the 5 Leone's .

That could be my list. Good replacements are welcome.

As both a plausably realistic western and a Leone Lover, lol I'd exorcise the following that I've seen from the list.

Django
Sabata
Navajo Joe
They Call Me Trinity

Of those that I've haven't seen I'd be inclined (just from reading their critiques and synopsis's) to sh*t can.

Django Kill
Return of Ringo
Pistol For Ringo

The rest I'll be willing to spend some dinero on and judge for myself.

I didn't like Return of Ringo, either, mainly because it doesn't feel like a Western. I don't know Django, Kill. It's a Milian and have read many favorable reviews.  I personally like the humoristic Sabata but not the sequels.

If you throw out all these you need to replace them.   Grin

hate to dampen the spirit, but i think its more appropriate to have a Top 10 Spaghetti list, as from what ive read in decent sources there are only about 10 Spags that are remotely close to Leone's standard.

From what i gather they are:

Big Gundown
Great Silence
Keoma
Day of Anger
Face to Face
Bullet for the General
Companeros
Mercenary

I revise my statement, i can only think of 8 now!!  Grin
Personally i think Django is shite, but clearly its influential, so i dont count that.

Looks like it would be a good idea to get this top 10/20 or whatever up and running. I agree a top 30 might be a stretch, but the point is that everybody should vote, so what get an actual top20 list, not a personal favorites list. I do agree that the leone 5 set the standard, for SW, then some come rela close and then some are good fun and the majority is crap. So, webmaster, would you be willing to put up a top20 thread, where everyone can vote (registered) seleceting from a list of about fifty Spags? I know of this Top20 on the sartana site, but that one hasn't been updated for years........

Shadow, I think one of the real problems you are going to find is that here in the US there are not many non Leone SW's readily available for sale or rent and some that are are poor quality and Pan & Scan.

Kermit had a good idea of starting a (Region 0) lending library. Or we'd all have to spring for Region 0 DVD players to be able to view any DVD. We'd also have to figure how to get it off the ground and all the logistics involved. R2 has way many more SW's available and SPO Japan has beautiful DVD's. Another factor is gonna be the Directors cut versus the various regional cuts.

Djimbo, "Death Rides a Horse" should be on that list.

Thirty DVDr's would run about $300+ US. (email me)

Anybody care to comment

if we all had access to these spaghettis, it would benifit and deepen our discussions. i know i want to take part, but i'm a non leone illiterate, so i keep my trap shut which bummer's me. i want to see but can't afford or find the big gundown or bullet for the general and all the rest.

being that sergio leone AND his contemporaries are our heros, anything we can do to further our knowledge must be dealt with.  some of us would become philanthropists
to  less fortunate members such as mice elf.
the penalty for not obeying said rules protecting various properties would be self banishment from the board  until settled up squarely, discretely between participants.  rules  are fairly self explainatory.  if we are who we say we are, there shouldn't be any need for penalties.
so there's nothing to lose, and so much we don't know yet to gain.

we set up a permanant thread for available concerning checked out spaghettis. those wishing to partcipate would have to take turns caring of rental thread updates when their turn us due.  for the more popular spaghettis one might have to post their leone screen name in order to wait untill  film is available.
postal fees, both borrowing and returning might best be handeled by the borrower. a set rent fee would be best discussed descretely via e-mail between  loner before the deal goes down which would encourage the borrower to get on with watching the film and returning it quicky and safely as possible so more invigorating discussions may follow.
is it bad, to speak to volunteers the way i do ?

There are about 850+ members if half of the anted up $.75 cents apiece we'd have a 30 SW DVDr library.

Why don't we make a voting, let's say for about one month, in order to choose those 20 movies? It would be a true "Sergio Leone Board" top list made by Sergio Leone and spaghetti westerns fans.
