Just watched this exceedingly melodramatic, crappy, sappy, western from Republic Pictures. John Wayne, Roy Rodgers, Walter Pidgeon, Gabby Hayes.

I'm now starting to wonder if a lot of these old westerns were lax on every aspect of historical details. Pre Civil War Kansas border wars, it was not only very loose with history (which is for dramatic purposes no doubt), but everyone was using 1873 Colt Peacemakers. The same faux pas I found with "Red River", how in the hell could Hollywood have remotely questioned Leone when their own house was very loose with the historical details.

hollywood, in those days,  seemed to have the additude
we've got john wayne,  who could ask for more. republic
pictures paid little  attention to details. along comes leone and his crew simi, morricone, ect. and obliterates the screen with an intirely new way of entertaining people. americans knew thay loved leone but didn't understand why.

hollywood didn't do their homework, and they paid dearly. the stage was set for leone. america was caught up with  social issues and left the western genre to die.

in the same way the UK took american blues music and breathed new life into it.  about all the culture we can manifest is elvis meeting nixon, lol

Right on Kerm,

Forgot to mention Dark Command takes place right before and during the Civil War.

Of course I didn't notice all that historical detail being wrong and coluldn't care less. The movie thrives on Wayne's character amd Pidgeon's villainy. They are both remarkable and make the movie entertaining. Claire Trevor though is not in the least attractive, unfortunately.  7\10

I remember liking this although the historical details bugged me too. It's been ages since I've seen it.
