Save it for what? Another cocktail in another Manhattan dive? Get the Blu-ray! You get a commentary with it and whatnot. Best value for money there is.

I think I'll read the Simenon's source if I'll have the chance. I don't think they took the finale from him.

I've just finished reading the novel and, of course, it has a completely different development and finale. Conte is forced to betray his little brother  (the reason, I suppose, is to prevent his possible vengeance by making him accomplice in the murder). In fact the other brother, the one in the movie seen tortured (a scene invented for the movie), killer by profession, has escaped southbound to prevent being forced to do the same. He didn't tell explicitly that to Conte when they met for a couple of hours, but maybe the novel implies that he didn't because he had little trust in Conte. So Conte (I can't remember if in the movie is shown as working for the Organization as he is in the novel)  is far from being a hero, even considering the fact that he could have prevented his bro's murder by not leading the killers to him. The novel is much better than the movie. 8/10

Easy to believe. I can no longer watch the movie to the end. I have to be satisfied with the first two thirds.

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film6/blu-ray_reviews_74/the_asphalt_jungle_blu-ray.htm

Visually, this doesn't look like much on an upgrade (a lot of close-ups in those screen caps; I hadn't remembered how TV-like this feature is). But the extras!

Quote
Criterion add the entertaining 2004 audio commentary from film historian Drew Casper, featuring archival recordings of actor James Whitmore as found on the older DVD. There is also Pharos of Chaos, a, 2-hour, 1983 documentary about actor Sterling Hayden directed by Manfred Blank and Wolf-Eckart Bühler and also entitled Leuchtturm des Chaos (German) - but is in English. It shows what an interesting chap Hayden was (he died in 1986 at 70-years of age.) There are new interviews with film noir historian Eddie Muller for a satisfying 25-minutes and 20-minutes with cinematographer John Bailey addressing the visual techniques employed by director of photography Harold Rosson and director John Huston in The Asphalt Jungle. There is brief archival footage of writer-director John Huston discussing the film and a full, 50-minute, episode of the television program City Lights from October 10th, 1979 featuring Huston discussing his life, work and family. There are also some audio excerpts of Huston speaking edited together from several updated archival audio interviews conducted by film critic Gideon Bachmann. In them director Huston discusses his methods for writing and directing a feature film. There is also a trailer and the package contains a liner notes booklet with an essay by critic Geoffrey O’Brien.

I'll be getting this the day it comes out (which is after the B&N sale), even though I'm lukewarm on the film. Drink, who claims to be an ardent fan, probably won't bother. Ha!
