http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film6/blu-ray_reviews_74/the_asphalt_jungle_blu-ray.htm

Visually, this doesn't look like much on an upgrade (a lot of close-ups in those screen caps; I hadn't remembered how TV-like this feature is). But the extras!

I'll be getting this the day it comes out (which is after the B&N sale), even though I'm lukewarm on the film. Drink, who claims to be an ardent fan, probably won't bother. Ha!

I am indeed a huge fan of the film,  but Beaver says the image quality is not a huge improvement from the DVD (which looks very good). On my 32-inch screen, I probably would not see any difference. And the bonus features on the BRD repeat a lot of stuff from the DVD. So, to buy the BRD for a few extra bonus features? When I can possibly rent the BRD on Netflix? After all, how many times am I going to watch the bonus features? We'll see the price, but I feel no urgency to buy this.

Caper films are the theme this year. Unhappily, they are all ones we know very well. There is a limited number of true noirs, I guess; that limit has been reached.

This thread has me curious about the film noir genre.  What would be 10 good film noir movies to start with?

A good list, but for the bonus I'd substitute Murder, My Sweet for Falcon. I'd also connive some way to get 99 River Street on there. Still, a good list.

And check out the French Poetic Realism Films, which were just before the noir period. The greatest is Port of Shadows, one of my all-time favorite films. Jean Gabin and Michele Morgan.

Also Le Jour Se Leve with Gabin. It was remade later as a noir with Henry Fonda called The Long Night. Both good films.

Also check out Jean Renoir's "La Bete Humaine," with Gabin. Remade by Fritz Lang with Glenn Ford in lead role, in a movie called HUMAN DESIRE.

And once we are discussing Lang/Ford, be sure to see The Big Heat

Enjoy  Smiley

P.s. Another film I love is HOUSE OF STRANGERS. Often considered a noir, IMO it is not a noir, but whatever, it is a great movie.
