Dir. Kirk Douglas, starring Kirk Douglas ...  Howard Nightingale  Bruce Dern ...  Jack Strawhorn  Bo Hopkins ...  Wesley  James Stacy ...  Harold Hellman  Luke Askew ...  Krag  David Canary ...  Pensteman, caught the last hour of this Western early this morning.

Nightingale is a lawman trying to get elected to the senate his platform is cleaning out the territory of outlaws and he does this with a sort of private army/posse that dress all alike. The chief badguy is Bruce Dern, who for me anyway,  never got that high on the bad ass heavy villain status. He always comes of as sort of a smart ass second banana and has never reached that Parthenon of Western Villians (I know, I know, he killed John Wayne) but even that doesn't cut it for me. I didn't see the first  He troops around with a bunch of morons that comprise his gang, but in the end he gets the better of Douglas.

I also caught part of Bad Company after Monte Walsh last night and it and this film are good examples of again why Westerns declined,  not mythic enough, a bit too much humdrum reality, and no real style.  What was going on in the 70's, what were they thinking, instead of making Mythic Westerns they were making anti-Myth , anti-Westerns, almost purposely deconstructing them.

Anyway, worth look.

It was the natural thing to do, but you just can't leave things there. The pendulum has to swing back and forth between myth and anti-myth to keep the genre alive. I like a lot of those 70s Westerns, we just needed some 80s Westerns that were good at taking some of the innovations of the anti-Westerns and re-purposing them for use in Myth. Instead, we got crap like Silverado . . .

Uh-oh, here we go again.  Where's TB? Grin

As for Posse, I liked it.  I thought it was a better example of a 70s western with not a ton of gunplay, but more of a psychological edge to the proceedings.  No one here is really a good guy, and Dern ends up being the most sympathetic character.  Good cast but I would have developed the personalities of the men in the posse more.  Bo Hopkins and Luke Askew were good, as always, but the other three were pretty vague and I didn't even hear two of the three's names until the last scene.

I liked the fall Nightingale takes that you know is coming about midway through the big party, and then Dern switching things up on his posse was great.  Not a perfect western, but I enjoyed it, 7.5/10. Afro

Silverado is not crap. It's not what I call a GREAT western but it's a fun homage at that. Jenkins has smoked to much of the cigar joe peace pipe. He's not thinking straight.

I just got through watching this film. My feelings are mostly favorable - I like the story, Bruce Dern is excellent, the shootouts are well-done and the first forty minutes or so are brilliant. But the middle section drags badly, and I'm not sure what to make of the ending. I like the idea of it, but in execution it seems rushed and overly convenient. Perhaps if the film had been a mite longer, with a bit more build-up, it could have been great.
