I've just got back from seeing an absolutely brilliant Studio Ghibli animated feature called Porco Rosso. It's about a half man, half pig called Porco Rosso who is a pilot in the Adriatic in the 1920's. The animation is superb, and it's highly entertaining from the get go. Anyone seen this? If not, I strongly recommend seeking it out. It was made in the early 90's so it may be on dvd somewhere outside Japan (I saw it at a studio Ghibli film festival)

The movie is a Hayao Miyazaki one, the same guy who made Princess Mononoke and most recently "Chihiro".

The Guy is a genious of the japanese animation.

His animations have some sad, nostalgic and unforgettable unforgettable.

According to IMDB, the movie as originally planned as a 30-45 minute in-flight movies for Japan Airlines. Director Miyazaki eventually expanded it into a feature-length production.

That's right - and Miyazaki is indeed a genius...

I have since discovered that Porco Rosso has only been released outside of Japan in France (Jean Reno was the voice of Porco) so it's not surprisisng it's hard to see. I caught it at a festival of Miyazaki films. I noticed on www.thedigitalbits.com that it is slated for dvd release in the US sometime soon and it's well worth seeing, like all of his films.

Sellers in EBAY are proposing the movie at very good prizes.

Yup. They are Asian imports, but the quality is very good though, at least on the Spirited Away disc, which is the only Asian Miyasaki disc I have. Porco Rosso is extremely entertaining, well worth a fistful of dollars. Forgive the pun. Couldn't resist.

Porco Rosso is now out in the US on a two disc special edition. There is an English language track, with Michael Keaton playing Porco, although for my money, I feel the original Japanese track captures a nicer feel to the character. The same edition with a few less extra features is out in Australia and I'd imagine may not be too far off a UK release.
