i agree the scope and direction is great. But those imitation Mexican and Irish accents from the main characters! Dear oh dear!

Dave Jenkins, Calder Benson, Jim Cooper, Chuck Youngblood. They were all alive until they met you, Frank.

I've always felt this was Sergio's best movie.

I also believe FOD was Morricone's best composition along with the OUATIW theme score.  "John's Invention" is the perfect backdrop for a ride through the desert mountain back country.  When I'm on horseback, I just rock along in cadence with that song playing away in my head.

To me, the "Dead sons" theme is one of the most haunting and sadest musical experiencies of my life.

Don't forget it was the song played by Morricone on Leone funerals.

I agree. The grotto sequence in FOD is haunting, especially because of the music. FOD is actually an incredibly sad movie - it's easy to overlook that because it begins with such a wierd, jokey tone. But by the end, Coburn is blown to pieces thinking about the ruins of his life and Steiger has lost his family and left with nothing. Pretty bleak really.

.....and then they start all over again.

I think its a fantastic film.  I played the first scene to my 13yo daughter the other day - she normally watches the usual blockbusters and likes to scare herself with cheap horror movies.   Watching her jaw drop as the wagon got ambushed and juan, the 'victim' of the scene, was the one holding the gun reminded me of when I first watched it.  Pow!

I agree the first scene with the ambush is one of my favorite Leone scenes also. "Vamos Caballo!"
