Inspired by our discussion on "The Magnificent Seven"/"The Professionals", I came up with an idea that hopefully will be fun.  Say you're a land baron, a Mexican village leader, or just someone who needs some guys to protect you in the Old West.  Which seven movie characters would you hire to protect you?

Now here's the twist: you can only have one character per movie or actor.  (Otherwise I would have at least four James Coburn characters on this list.  ;D)  They can be from any Western you please, Spaghetti, American, whatever.

My picks:

- The Man With No Name (Clint Eastwood) ~ The guy with the fastest draw ever.  Is any elaboration needed?
- Bill Dolworth (Burt Lancaster, "The Professionals") ~ He's a great dynamiter and a great shot too.  Those could come in handy.
- Samuel Potts (James Coburn, "Major Dundee") ~ Hey, you need a tracker, why not him?  Get rid of those shifty Indian sidekicks and he's a sure pick for me.
- Lee (Robert Vaughn, "The Magnificent Seven") ~ Just like this guy.  Sometimes he cracks under pressure, but I'm willing to take that chance.  :P
- Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan, "The Wild Bunch") ~ Straight-shooting, thoroughly professional, and a real hardass.
- Colonel Douglas Mortimer (Lee Van Cleef, "For A Few Dollars More") ~ 'Nuff said.
- John T. Chance (John Wayne, "Rio Bravo") ~ C'mon, you need at least one John Wayne character in there!  He had to have killed more guys than of Wayne's other guys in a non-war movie, so he gets my vote.

How about you guys?

But then the problem is: whom are you gonna pit them against? And how long is the movie going to be?

Well, imagine this as a Mag 7 (albeit that one of them got bumped off in the movie!).

1) Man with no Name;
2) Django (the Franco Nero one);
3) Cuchillo (Milian - Big Gundown);
4) Banjo (Berger - sabata);
5) Sabata (Cleef);
6) Navajo Joe (Reynolds);
7) Blind Man (Anthony).

Not necessarily my favourite characters, but a good mix I think.  Maybe needing to be pitted against the baddest of the bad, of which I would suggest :

1) Indio;
2) Angel Eyes; - may be confusing for the camera if he comes face to face with Sabata!
3) Sancho (Fernando Sancho - pistol for Ringo);
4) John (Palance - Camponeros);
5) Duncan (Sambrell - Navajo Joe);
6) Frank (Fonda);
7) Loco (Kinski - Great Silence)

However, in view of the fact that only one of these bad guys was actually the victor against the heros, they would have to be ably assisted by a gang of bandits, and their respective henchmen.  ;D

Well first off, I'd be one of the magnificent 7.
Clint Eastwood (Manco) me
James Coburn (Britt)
Charles Bronson (Harmonica)
John Wayne (Tom Donaphen) (He'd bring Pompei along)
Lee van Cleef (Col. Mortimer)
Steve McQueen (Vin)
I don't know his name but he's the Rev. and Col. in The Searchers.

Put up against Eli Wallach and Gian Maria Volonte and their gang.

In Tucumcari.

Making $100 a day for 6 weeks.

Django (Franco Nero) from Django.
Sanjuro (Toshiro Mifune) from Yojimbo.
Ogami Itto (Tomisaburo Wakayama) from Sword of Vengeance.
Yuki (Meiko Kaji) from Lady Snowblood.
Jack Carter (Michael Caine) from Get Carter.
John (James Coburn) from Duck, You Sucker!
Frankenstein (David Carradine) from Death Race 2000

It's class.

The problem with all these casts is that nobody is going to die, with the exception of Coburn.

I prefer to concentrate on villains:
Jack Palance from Shane (do any agree he's the only alternative to Tuco as best western performance ever?)
Volonté-Indio
Fonda-Frank
Fernando Sancho (from the first McGregor or The Return of Ringo)
John McIntyre (from any Anthony Mann)
Eli Wallach from M7
Franco Ressel (did he ever play good guy?)
They must find support, anyway, in Porfirio Diaz's entire Mexican Army, otherwise there's no chance they might survive the first 20 minutes of the movie.

Ward Bond ya mean?  I like bringing Tom Doniphon along with Pompey; definitely would like to get a Woody in there somewhere.  ;D

John McIntire - the only Anthony Mann movie I know him from was "The Tin Star", where he was the old doctor.

You can make your outlaw band of as many as you like.    Here's mine:

Calvera (Eli Wallach) with all 40 of his men
Join up with: Indio (Gian Maria Volonte) and his gang
George Kennedy and his gang from "The Sons of Katie Elder"
The railroad posse (minus Thornton of course) from "The Wild Bunch", headed by Albert Dekker
Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) and his whole Mexican army from same
And finally, Jesus Raza (Jack Palance) and his gang from "The Professionals"
Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), though LVC and Strother are elsewhere so maybe they wouldn't join in.

. . . All under the join command of Frank (Henry Fonda) from "Once Upon A Time In The West".  (We'll include his gang too, even though some of the actors overlap with Indio's.)

So that's, what, 300-400 people?  That enough for the "Django"-inclined people?

I'd like each to have a different specialty, so...

mortimer(van cleef) and his impeccable planning
the swede(nero) and his ingenuity
josey wales(eastwood) and his double pistol action
sean mallory(coburn) and his dynamite
ramon rojo(volonte) and his rifle
cuchillo(milan) and his knives
harmonica(bronson) for being such a quick draw

I also picked those seven because they'd be an interesting bunch of characters(and i don't just mean characters as in movie characters)

Harmonica: So, you're not a businessman after all.
Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race...

He's in Winchester 73 as well. Have bought the dvd last week and still have to watch it. can't remember myself whom he's playing there. Strange even more that I associated him so easily with Mann.
