Out of the Polanski movies I've seen, Repulsion is my favorite.

Are you trying to start a topic about bad movies made by good filmmakers?

The only Polanski movies I've seen besides Repulsion are Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown, all of which I like. There's just something about Repulsion. It's worth a look.

That's not much of a description, I know, Wink but I haven't seen any of these movies in quite some time.

This Polanski box is what I want:

I think he's great, have any of you seen the disturbing
The Tenant? Pretty weird and pretty good. A quite modest film he made after Chinatown, the absolute masterpiece.

I watched Repulsion last night on an old VHS tape, very good flick of a women's decent into madness.

I'm a huge fan of Polanski's work, and I've seen most of his movies. If you want a stinker I can recommend PIRATES, a "comedy" from 1986, starring Walter Matthau. I must admit I've never seen the whole thing, as it is actually unwatchable rubbish.

What was Polanski thinking?

The pint sized Pole's idea of humour has always left me a bit puzzled. DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES has never struck me as at all funny, and his Capri comedy CHE? is pretty poor stuff too.

However, he has made so many outstanding films, I'll forgive him those ones, CHINATOWN, ROSEMARY'S BABY, CUL DE SAC, REPULSION, and THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH, to name just a few.

Talking of big name directors making bad films, what about Kubrick and EYES WIDE SHUT? It is bloody awful! Or closer to a recent discussion, Sam Pekinpah's CONVOY.

"Eyes Wide Shut" was ok up to the orgy sequence, I still can't believe exactly what he was thinking, no anchor to reality, a shut-in's from the outside world weird fantasy idea of an unlikely elaborately staged orgy.  Everybody go to the cloak store and grab cloaks & masks, lol.

Afro  Dave thanks for the heads up.  I'll be wishing and hoping.  I wish they'd get Polanski in a studio and include a commentary.

Polanski is one the last few GREAT film makers.

Like Kubrick and Peckinpah (they all made about the same amount of movies) he made only two or three lesser films, the rest is totally unique inspired fascinating well-crafted stuff.

He's favorite is DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES, because it was his happiest time, he was in nlove and it marked his start as an international A-director.
(of course) I love it, but even more CUL-DE-SAC, WHAT? and REPULSION of course.
Most of his stuff is like 2 years of (A-grade) film school packed into one single film.

PIRATES sucked. But most great directors had a difficult time in the 80's. (Sergio made the best film Smiley)

How about a thread GREAT films by mediocre/bad film makers?
I need to see a good Castellari film yet. Or Franco...
