Yes they covered less than 70 miles but the way to the NEXT nearest town is 70 miles,  so walking in in uneven country, you can make a mile in about 20 minutes, and walking for 10 hours a day Tuco is about 2 days more or less from the nearest town.

And the gunshop he makes for (happens to find, as the case may be) isn't in a town, either, if I remember right. So maybe he didn't have to go the whole 70 miles on foot.

Tuco didn't have a horse that I remember. He was on foot.

We don't know how he gets from the gunsmith shop to the grotto; I imagine he took the gunsmith's horse; he and the gang are apparently on horses when they ride into wherever it is Sibley is retreating through; it's fair to say that once Tuco has the means (ie. guns) he'll appropriate the necessary transportation.

I doubt the gunshop owner had a horse; with the size of that town, bet he lived either in the shop or within 200 yards, didn't need a horse.  And he was no youngster either; a horse is a fair amount of work (I know, my family has two).

Isn't he free of the ropes by the time he arrives at the town? I can't remember.

He has his hands tied and has the noose around his neck when Blondie stops the horse to get rid of him.
Then Blondie makes his "70 miles" comment, leading us to assume they road 70 miles.

I think you just presented the irrefutable proof that nothing was impossible in Leone's West.   ;D

I do reiterate my original comment in absence of a more plausible explanation.... :)

I think we're giving entirely too much credence to a man who repeatedly told law enforcement that he was turning Tuco in for the reward, and later told his two adversaries that he wrote the location of the gold down on the bottom of a rock. Uh, guys, Blondie has been known to tell a few fibs . . .

Blondie clearly turns his head and looks in a backwards  direction as he says "The way back to town is only 70 miles", back as in the direction of where they came from, and also notice that Blondie turns around his horse and heads back in that general direction. He was headed back, Tuco has to find another town somewhere.

Still the question remains  as to why was Tuco still has the noose around his neck and his hands were still tied after how ever long they traveled? You would think he would want them off as soon as they got clear!

Blondie's 70 miles comment was later topped by Tuco's desert remark of "100 miles of  beautiful sun baked sand", and "100 miles...thats a a nice walk"

Blondie definatley says the nearest town is 70 miles away but not necessarily the one they just came from. I think TUCO found another place not a proper town probably 20 miles or so from where they were because he was very thirsty but not completely exhausted ....so had been walking maybe 4 or 5 hours. And he doesn't drink that much water.....
Where Blondie headed I'm not sure,  it must have been the town where he booked in the hotel which must have been more than 70 miles ie. not the "hanging town" but how did the horse make it. Would have taken maybe 10 hrs at 10mph non stop.
With no provisions.

70 miles... that's about 115 kilometers.

For a man to cross 500 meters without a horse, fast walking (not running), it would take him from 3 to 5 minutes. Let's say 4 minutes.

115 x 2 = 230

230 x 4 = 920 (minutes)

920 / 60 = 15.33 (hours) + a few hours, if he stopped to take a break or something else... comes to roughly 20 hours.

It's a 20 hours walk.

Tuco could have pulled it off, considering how much he wanted to get even with Blondie. (If he had to walk for 70 miles, of course.)
