Is that The Mormon Caravan? Who thought THAT one up?

Me.  8) A smart title, I'd say. It adds some controversy to the movie, doesn't it?

Yes except that it really doesn't deal with Mormonism at all very much, it skirts the issue, there is no depiction of multiple wives, polygamy, etc. It's just the usual Ford feel good stuff highlighted by the barn dance on the prairie.

The italian distributor didn't care, he just wanted the prospect audience to think it did.

I keep not understanding what's your opinion about the movie: is this the masterpiece most people think it is (but it's the same people who think My Darling Clementine is) or not?

False advertising, eh? The nerve of those gypsy--er, Italian--distributors!

And Joe, I'm with titoli on this one: you keep changing your story. What's the true gen?

Its very good, classic Ford, I like the use of the usual Ford stable of actors in the leads rather than the usual suspects. You really can't fault Ford for including his usual touchstones.

Its would be like complaining that Leone used a lot of corrida's or too much music or manical laughter in his Westerns.

It would be a valid complaint, though, if he provided his viewers with nothing else. I take it that Wagon Master has something that sets it apart from more middlin' Ford fare?

Just bought the dvd and watched it. Excellent. Fordisms are kept to a minimum, though there are minor complaints : I don't wanna see Jane Darwell, Russell Simpson in any movie. James Arness is embarassing. Much better in The Thing 8)). And I can't understand that even while Ben Johnson warns people from shaving and bathing to save water his face never shows a sign of beard). I also don't like Kemper here. But this is the only Ford movie where I actually like the score (courtesy of Sons of Pioneers) perfectly matched with images and even the open air (well. open studio) barn dances. Really, the action part is the one I'd do gladly without and just stick to the voyagers vicissitudes. 9\10

Wagon Master is very probably John Ford's most entertaining W. A relaxing, laughs-aperient caravan journey with a bunch of seemingly cliched and trivial but in fact highly entertaining characters. You wouldn't believe this is a JF movie.

(around) 7.5/10

Just got and watched the new R1 disc and . . . what a turkey. Not much in the way of action, unless you count dancing. There's 2 different square dances and between them some kind of weird Navajo dance. The threat from the Cleggs doesn't amount to much. The Sons of the Pioneers get to do 4 songs. A lot of time is spent watching the heroes mooning over their gals of choice. A real snoozer.
