Caught this (non John Wayne) Ben Johnson in the lead John Ford western the other day, nothing great had a lot of JF's stock players Hank Worden for one, also had a young James Arness as a baddie and Ward Bond who later starred in the TV show Wagon Train that was derived from this film. A bit too melodramatic for my SW sharpened tastes.  Cool

Simply a masterpiece and one of Ford's central films, even in spite of the usual dose of Ford's rather flat humour.
Beautiful directed and photographed.

Well this was on TCM today, and it was very good, very similar to Ford's "My Darling Clementine" in feel, a lot of the regular Ford stock actors made up the cast minus John Wayne. In this film the top three actors are Harry Carey Jr., Ward Bond and the Wagon Master, Ben Johnson, and set against a some very cinematic landscapes with wonderful set pieces of a wagon train crossing the wilderness & fording rivers. Its not Monument Valley but the desert around Moab Ut. that makes an appearance in this film.

Joan Dru plays a love interest for Ben Johnson, Ward Bond is a cantankerous Mormon elder who backslides into his old ways every once in a while, and Hank Worden is a goofey bandit brother, part of the Clegg Gang whose leader Father Shiloh Clegg, is played well by Charles Kemper. Jane Darwell is also on board and James Arness.

This needs a DVD release. I'd rate it up there among Fords best. The presentation though was full matte, I believe that is what it was shot in though it still looked a bit cropped in some shots.

Hope some of the rest of you got to see this.

there seems to be a DVD available in R2; not all these vendors will ship to the States but at least one will:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0016586YU/ref=dp_olp_0/275-9065722-7159863?ie=UTF8&qid=1232142245&sr=1-1&condition=all

Prices aren't too bad, either. I may have to buy one of these.

This is maybe Ford's best western, or at least one of his 3 best.

That was 4 years ago, & I didn't see the full film just caught a part of it, and I've changed my opinion, obviously.

That doesn't explain the need to start a whole new thread.

It's listed in the American Westerns thread. Everyone should search the film list threads before using the search engine.

Its not supposed to be about the Mormon Caravan, it depicts a later migration, they are headed to the San Juan River Valley of Colorado.
