I've always thought that he felt pity on the poor crippled Morton, and was relishing the fact that Morton was a pathetic crippled man without any protection at all.  There was, in Cheyenne's view, no reason to kill Morton.  That's what I suspect happened at the second meeting as well: Cheyenne took pity on Morton, but Morton pulled a gun on him and the inevitable happened.

Because Cheyenne isn't a so bad guy and he wouldn't kill a child, a priest,a woman nor an invalid man.
