I thought I'd scan and post this for everyone- it's from a Jan '73 issue of photoplay - I've never seen this particular interview before - pity it's so short.

Thanks for scanning and posting that. It's a fascinating little article on many levels. I wonder if the reporter only had a few minutes with Leone -- either on the phone or in person, or maybe at a press conference -- and just whipped up this little one-pager rather than file no report at all.

BTW, I laughed at the reference to Leone being scared of horses. There's a photo of him actually riding one around the Sweetwater set of OUATITW.

You're welcome everyone. I think my favorite part is where he calls himself a "scary cat" :) There's no mention in the mag of the interview conditions, but it is a pity the piece isn't longer cause it seems to be all quotes from Leone himself (maybe he submitted the entire piece - as there is no author attributed).

Yeah, I liked that "scary cat" reference too. Obviously he meant "scaredy cat"...at least he got "fraidy cat" right elsewhere in the piece.   ;D

thanx. I wonder though whom the reporter was thinking of as an alternative when he wrote tha Leone is recognised as "perhaps" the best non-American director of the American Western. Corbucci?

wonderful stuff.

SL, btw, should own the first 6 places on the imdb top 250 permanently.

let's get that going, guys.

I would let him own first... fifth.... eighth.... and eleventh place.....

then FAFDM and FOD would be down there a lot more.

Who knows... maybe the reporter just didn't want to speak openly, so nobody with different opinion (whoever!) would object. I observe such tendencies on myself sometimes...

Right, it's just a rhetorical device for hedging your comment when you don't know enough to be sure that your sweeping statement is correct. Kinda weasily, better avoided.

BTW, am I just being cynical, or is it maybe possible that SL never said those things to the interviewer? That might explain why SL says surprising things never reported elsewhere.....

That's what you get, Drink, for not appreciating the genius of When You Read This Letter.
