THE SCENE WHERE NOODLES AND MAX LEAVE THE HOSPITAL DECIDING TO GO TO FLORIDA JOE PESCI IS SEEN WITH A MICHEVIOUS LOOK ON HIS FACE.

Maxy and the gang were making deals independent of him since they were under him. Remember the talk about the trucking company?

My guess is that he knew who they were meeting and when he saw them walking out before he went in he knew that they had made choices without him and are becoming independent of him. It's all on the line of the "You don't work for me, I don't work for nobody!" "I don't like bosses!"(I forget exact lines) little story/issue with Max.
