On the scene when Tuco goes to that town to kill Blondie and that fellow is yelling "Hooooray!" out of the doorway of his hotel there are these four horsemen with really big beards shown riding into the town.

Knowing Leone's attention to detail and historical accuracy and the fact that every shot is planned out to perfection and with the utmost importance, I'm just wondering if those are supposed to be real historical characters from the Civil War? The way he puts an emphasis on them and the fact that they look the way they do I wouldn't doubt it.

Also, about the two towns in the movie that get bombed, were they based on real occurances?

It doesn't seem to be any well known pic of guys with big beards that I recall off hand that I could point to, perhaps a copy of a M. Brady image.

That time period had a real contrast in facial and head hair styles. You see a lot of historical picts of clean shaven guys with long hair, or handelbar mustaches, others with full beards and short hair, some with huge sideburns, some with just chin wiskers, others goatees, a really wide range.

I allways assumed the long beards were scouts, but thats just my opinion.

About the towns, there were a lot of southern towns that got heavily bombarded under sieges, I don't think any New Mexico Territory towns were ever battered like that, Texas maybe.

LOL! That was a good one! Seriously. I think it was just Leone's attention to detail because if you look at the old Civil War pictures, almost every single soldier had a beard. I don't think they were carrying a shaving kit up to the frontline.....but maybe there were! Would anyone know?

I agree with CJ, I always thought they were body guards(they are pretty tough looking) or scouts of some kind ??? ??? ??? ???

Always seemed to me like they were some sort of hired gun or Mercenaries. Could be to act as body guards but maybe just sort of elite contracted guns working for the Confederates. Reminds me of Joesy Wales. No uniform just a good gun. They seem to be the rough and ready don't have time for a shave, been out in the woods and battle fields for years kinda guys.

i hear old BLACKBEARD would put smoke stacks in his hair so his face would always be covered in a haze to make him look more demonic.

pretty fascinating.
