Viva María!

Dir Louis Malle. (1965) French/Italian Production

BBC 2 Wed 1 Dec, 11:50 pm - 1:45 am  115mins

Somewhere in Central America, 1907: María I (Brigitte Bardot) , the daugther of an Irish terrorist, after the death of her father and on the run from local govements in central America. she meets up with María II (Jeanne Moreau), the singer of an circus while trying to smuggle herself  over the mexican border. She decides to stay with the circus. On her debut as a singer, she accidently invented strip-tease, that made the circus famous. But accidently they meet an socialist revolutionair and finding themselves leading this revolution against the dictator, the capitalists and the church. With María I (Brigitte Bardot) past experience with explosives and a vickers machine gun coming handy...

Absolutely Hilarious.. A Mexican Revolution done completely for laughs. Very funny set pieces. The ''''''''Maria & Mara'''''''' vaudiville act is fantastic. local tyant governer ''''''''Rodriquez'''''''' has a giant hamster wheel powered by Mexican peasants to run the luxury of electricity in his Mansion Villa. And a Hangmans Pole in the letter ‘R’ for his name. Armoured Trains, Large action set pieces. Bardot being handy with a Windchester. Wonderful late night discovery.

It was a englished dubbed version. Read today the subtitled version is alot more ammusing, for the french dialogue is more spot on.
Kicking myself I didn''t tape it. I think it’s out of print.
Anybody else catch this last night, or seen it before?

Nice one.
proberly gonna wait for this. Might have a choice of French (with subs) and a English Language Dub.

Ive been trying to find out if it was actually filmed in Mexico, or Spain, some have classed it a Spaghetti Western.
The locations don't seemed to register as south region Spain, or more presise Almeria from any other films ive seen. Alot more greener almost tropical in some scenes, it could be the north, Portugal maybe.

I know the other French/Italian production of the time 'Gun For San Sebastian' was the real deal in Mexico.

Its Mexico, read the film reviews on Amazon under the VHS listing for the fim. Somebody mentions the train was a narrow gauge Mexican Railway.
