Yes, the repetitive plot formula left me cold, too.

Mixed review of the new Blu: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/55023/bullet-for-the-general-a/

The gist: 2 cuts of the film, English and Italian audio options, compromised image that looks "smeared".

However, you will want to buy this even if you don't like the image, don't like the film, don't own a blu-ray player, because on the bonus disc, which is in SD, you get Gian Maria Volonté: Un Attore Contro. The doc is nearly 2 hrs. long.

Not a great doc, if I rememeber well, one of the reasons being that many copyright holders (among whom the Leone's heirs) denied the use of sequences from those movies. Actually the work with Leone is just barely mentioned.

What are the other reasons?

The lack of Leone coverage is not, to my mind, a deal breaker. Volonte is of interest for himself. It's not like we in North America have lots of material on him to choose from.

It is not a well-balanced analysis. It concentrates on some movies because of the availability of material, both archive and interviews, not because of their importance in V.'s career. As L.'s movies were the turning point in his career, their treatment in a few seconds is all the more irritating. Sure, it is better than nothing, but it is not a good, indispensable doc.

There is supposed to be an international version that has Bernard Grant the voice actor who dubbed Volonte in English-language in Leone's films. The Anchor Bay release uses someone else.

What version did you watch Grogs?

I watched the movie on Youtube. It didn't sound like Grant dubbing Volonte though.

Re watched great visuals during the train attack entertaining enough for me, about an 8/10 I'd probably boost it another half notch if I ever get a hold of the Bernard Grant dub of Volonte.

I liked it much more the second time around, though the political preachments still irritate me.

The German R2 DVD has both dubs on the same uncut version.

I think the US Blu-ray has both dubs but on different cuts.

I have a copy of the former that I'd be willing to sell/trade. Just send me a PM...
