What do these do besides let Harmonica spy on the progress of Frank?  Perhaps we need Cigar Joe and his Damn Trains experts.

I know a lot about trains and I don't even know what that is. It was probably just an invention for the film. Where else could Harmonica spy on Morton and Frank on a train?

A vent would be my guess. Trains were gas lit so a vent would be needed to exhaust any fumes from potential leaks.

The way it lifts up on a hinge is the funny part and the hole is long and skinny like a scope for both eyes. Sounds like it was an invention for the film, being passed off as a vent. That's what I gather from you guys. ;D

Well it must be a European gadget, there are no such a things on American passenger cars in the images I've looked at.

john baldwin, it makes sense, American passenger cars have a raised roof that runs down the center isle (our cars have center isles) no seperate compartments with the isle along one side in coach, only in sleeping cars are they that way and partly along the kitchen in the dinning cars.

The raised roof has vents along the sides I believe, and the old wood/coal stoves had tin chinneys that went through the roof on either side of the raised center.
