Heh. good thing you opened and closed this one while I was incommunicado doing holiday stuff-I loathe this score. ;D
The ways still open to discuss this Derringdo!
I have a 20 minute segment of the OUATITW sountrack on a Morricone compilation and whilst i think Harmonicas Theme is essential,Jills Themes (i love the version best with the opening "chimes")features THREE times and yes it is a test of endurance by the time of the third rendition.Cheyenes clippity-clop theme is also far from Morricones best-but i like the humour of it!
However once the music is married with the Leone visuals it makes perfect sense and yes,its essential.

This score is wrongly credited to Bruno Nicholai(for contactual reasons) and most of us will be aware that it was in fact Morricone who did the soundtrack.
I'd never really considered getting the separate cd soundtrack and now having watched the movie for the first time in a while last night,i'm tempted.I always liked Milians vocals on the rousing title track and the various instrumental reprises but the score also contains a good handful of other mainly upbeat themes and they're all very catchy, without exception!
I found it really difficult not to vote essential for this one and the main reason i've gone for very good is that it doesn't really contain that killer track like Harmonica's Theme,Ectasy of Gold or the pocket watch theme(FAFDM)
which are so emotionally affecting in Morricones other scores.

In almost every respect i think The Mercenary is better than the more popular(it seems) Companeros including the music.Whilst i think that the fiesta tune on the opening credits and much played throughout is only ok,i absolutely adore each characters separate themes especially the Polaks very cool staggered whistling theme and Curlys similar theme but with electric guitar or church organ. However the real killer track for me is the bullring number when Paco faces Curly and i love the shifts and build ups in the arrangement, from Curlys theme to the Polaks and then the trumpet march begins and eventually a full blown choir take over-truimphal and very essential i'd say!!
Poll closes in 14 days and result will be added to the Morricone guide.

The music did it for me "before" I saw the movie. So there's no question about it.

I love this score. I was deciding whether to give it a V. Good or Essential and gave it the latter.
The showdown theme is excellent, his best outside of the Leone's. I also like the very fast theme, played  on  organ i think. Can't remember the name it right now.

I gave it a good but probably should have upped it to very good, This soundtrack also has different themes for different characters, and I've since first viewing have re-evaluated my estimation of the film to Sollimas best.  8)
