But Wayne plays a very different type than Fonda in Ford's films. Hard to imagine him playing any of Fonda's roles. And vice versa.

I think Fonda could have done Wayne's role in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon or Rio Grande. But that's all speculation; Fonda wasn't doing movies then.

I just watched this again last night, hadn't seen this in 15 or 20 years.  I liked it, I've been to Monument Valley and like that scenery.  I rate this pretty highly for an American western.  I had remembered the "print the legend" theme at the end. 

I also thought Fonda and Wayne did creditable jobs dancing.  Wayne was good in this, but I still like his performance in Red River as his best.  Shirley Temple was just a pure American treasure, I liked her as an adult actress.  Shirley was one of few child actors who had such charisma you could instantly tell they had star power (others in my opinion were Elizabeth Taylor and Jennifer Connelly).
