You may want to check out Theeb (2014) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3170902/

so Groggy, during the past few months, I purchased the BRD boxset of LoA, watched the movie, put the free soundtrack on my iPod and listened to it a million times, and read the coffee-table book in the boxset. No, I did not read Seven Pillars of Wisdom or any other book by/about Lawrence, and no, I don't plan to. (Anyway, doesn't reading a book that a movie is based on always ruin the movie, even ex post facto?  ;) ) I was going to discuss some stuff here, but I figured it was useless during your absence ... Now I forgot what I wanted to discuss. Eventually, I'll read through the 18 pages of this thread. No, I don't care all that much about the real-life story of the man. Though the movie is fun.

Now, tell me something about LoA. The movie or the man. Besides for his mother mating with a scorpion ...

You might find the exploits of his female counterpart Gertrude Bell interesting.

Wasn't there a biopic of her with Nicole Kidman recently? Supposedly terrible, but it exists.

Did you have any thoughts on the deleted scene with Allenby, drink?

Turns out that you are correct and that it was directed by none other than Werner Herzog! I hadn't even heard of this before. The reviews do seem pretty scathing.

I read a biography about her a long time ago that I remember being quite a boring read about what in real life was undoubtedly a fascinating story... I guess it's all in the way you tell it.

Re: Bell, I read Georgina Howell's book a few years back, which wasn't bad. There's another biography by Janet Wallach which I haven't read. Certainly a great story and it's a shame Herzog seems to have botched it.

Could be good; I liked the book a lot. The title is misleading, because it's really about 4 people who were in the Middle East at the same time: Lawrence, a German intelligence officer, an American working for Standard Oil in Turkey, and a Zionist working for the Turks as an agronomist who was also running a spy ring. They bumped up against each other from time to time as they pursued their various agendas.

Part of me wouldn't mind a more accurate film/series/whatever about Lawrence, but it will be difficult to pull off, especially if they follow Anderson's book. That said, I'm much happier about this than the proposed Roland Emmerich (!) adaptation of Michael Korda's Hero a few years back.

I would think that a series would be the ideal way to treat the material. How could they do it in a feature?

Not in a way that does the material justice. Anyway, who's going to play Lawrence?
