Good analysis. I particularly like the way you demonstrate that Bolt's gifts as a dramatist--considerable as they were--weren't always wanted when it came time to edit a scene. Lean certainly knew where to make cuts.

Conversely, re-reading Bolt's stageplays recently showed how much his screenwriting work affected his writing. Gentle Jack and especially State of Revolution seem more like screenplays than stage works.

I saw this as a kid at a big downtown theater when it first came out, a big deal, like the Alamo, How the West was Won, etc.  I didn't think that much of it, haven't seen it since though.

I think the most interesting thing I've heard about it - if true - is that the sand scenes were filmed in Almeria, like where Tuco dragged Blondie.

The train sequences in the second half were shot in Almeria, and the oasis set was used by Indio's gang in FAFDM. The Aqaba set was constructed in the area as well if memory serves. I don't recall offhand the precise locations. The balance of the desert scenes were shot in Jordan and Morocco.

Unfortunately the "re-release" right now seems to be a one-day only engagement - and it's a Thursday. As the nearest theater showing it is an 80+ mile drive I'll have to debate the ethics of playing hooky.

A few Pittsburgh-area cinemas are screening it, but apparently just that day. Pittsburgh's actually closer to 60 miles but that's still an 80-90 minute drive assuming no traffic hang-ups - a risky assumption on the Parkway.

Tough luck, but if it's one of your all time favorites I'd say it's worth the driving. I had to travel 350 kilometres (there and back home) in one day for seeing OUATITW on the big screen and I still don't regret it. The same goes for OUATIA.

Shocked That's quite a feat. You are a dedicated Leone fan. Afro

I'm not worried about the drive so much as missing work.

Info on the US release. Sadly it appears to be one-day only.

Early Blu-Ray review. Sadly it looks like the "seduction" scene is absent:

Dunno if anyone bothered to check out the trailer above but the picture quality looks amazing. One month from today until it's in theaters - can't wait! Afro
