You realize that "The Far Country" is circa, or post 1897, its another Turn of The Century Western that doesn't emphasize the "end of the West".

imdb says it's 1896 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048055/

Screw IMDb, IMDb isn't always right, look up the Klondike Gold Rush which is what its based on. Not the initial gold strike. The Chilcoot Pass sequence wouldn't make sense until the rush started.

There's a subtitle that explicitly says 1896 at the beginning of the film.

well subtitles don't always make sense either. all Westerns should have cj as historical consultant  ;)

Bend of the River takes place in 1847 yet has characters toting Winchester rifles. I don't think Anthony Mann films are the last word in Western versimilitude.

just saw the movie for the second time (though the first time I missed the first 15 minutes, and it may have been a pan-and-scan, so I'll consider this my first "real" viewing). I give this an 8.5/10; IMO it is easily the best of the Mann-Stewart Westerns.
I particularly loved Stewart's performance here. The only real criticism I have of the movie is the excessive process shots of the snow-covered mountains.

It could have become Mann's best western if Mann had skipped the sentimental parts towards the ending. 8/10

That's why I like Man Of The West a tad better.

I give THE FAR COUNTRY the same rating as MAN OF THE WEST, both terrific movies, but when talking just about the Mann-Stewart Westerns, IMO, THE FAR COUNTRY is the best by far and away. I don't even like any of the others besides THE MAN FROM LARAMIE.
