Sutherland I think just didn't quite have the gravitas for that role, Richard Boone maybe, John Ireland, perhaps.

I think Jimmy Stewart would've made a good Frank. Even though it's hard to imagine Jimmy as a really brutal guy the shock value would've been on the level of Henry Fonda.

 "The bridge is still up!"

Plane flies by, drops bomb, knocking out the bridge.

 "No, it ain't!"

Sutherland was so good in Kelly's Heroes, especially his scenes with Gavin McCleod's cigar-chomping Moriarty.

he was the best thing about  "Kelly's heroes". Eastwood was much to stiff and lacked his usual sarcastic humor, and he didnt do very much in the film itself.

Well, what's the fun in that?  Playing the what-if game is half the fun.  I'm guessing at least half of the "classic" movies on imdb.com have a thread dedicated to remake or alternate casting or both of the above.

And I've probably started 90% of those threads.  Tongue

I think Steve McQueen would have been a great Harmonica and it would have been his best movie.

Coburn would've been good too. I can really imagine him hunting down Frank.

If I had to make the cast in 1968 different from the way it really is, it would be:

Harmonica: James Coburn

I agree that Mcqueen would have been great, as for Coburn...I dont know....

I do see coburn as "the man with no name" though.

I can see McQueen as Harmonica although the character might have to be rewritten a bit.  If I remember right, isn't Harmonica supposed to have some Indian blood, Navajo maybe, in him?

Not that that'd be a breaking point or anything. Just imagine that opening sequence delivered by McQueen, it gives me chills just thinking about it. However, I do think Bronson was perfect for that role, those steely eye, that weathered face.  He became Harmonica in my eyes.
