I was wondering about something. Why did the Italian bootleggers give those kids, over time, a million dollars for their idea. Why didn't they just steal their idea rather than give the kids money for it? Just curious.

I have thought the same myself. If the mafia would have stole the idea what were the kids gonna do? Cry to their mommas?

Though Noodles's mom does enough crying for the both of them I hear... ;)

What does anyone know about Noodle's mother? Is she mentioned other than the "Maxi I want to thank you for everything you did for my family"...?

It is ok. It was a pretty obscure reference anyway. Its not like that line was a huge line in the movie, it just stuck with me somehow.

In my opinion for two reasons: the kids know how and where to get the boxes and they could tell the cops about those activities if the thieves would have not paied them.

A very good explanation.

A very good explaination.

My pleasure.

You know, OUATIA is definitely my fav movie. I think Noodles is one of the greatest anti hero ever filmed. And we all have experienced the anti hero situation in life. Noodles is an extraordinary sublimation of those particular moments.

But that leaves the inevitable question: wouldn't that be a reason for the Italians to kill the nobody unthreatening kids? Aren't rats murdered mercilessly during the time and location they were all living in? What I'm saying is that I highly doubt the kids lacked the street smarts to get themselves killed like that.

I always thought that the mafia respected the kids enough by what they did to not off 'em.

My thoughts on this issue are that the Capuanos recognized that Noodles and his buddies had a lot of practical intelligence which they could use to their advantage.  I mean if they could come up with the salt buoys, they could probably come up with other devices as well.  Plus just killing a few teenagers/kids isn't and never was kosher for the Mob (even bootleggers).

Makes sense. Maybe there are some deleted sections from the original script ( has anyone read the original script? It's so different from the movie! ) that gave a bit more screen time to the Capuanos.

In movies the next generation of their gang seemed to be prized. The Corleone brothers, Michael's son, Pesci and Liotta's characters on Goodfellas. I guess if you want to trust people it's best to get them young ;)

If the kids are caught they could also have "Just found these crates floating in the water, officer!" if you know what I mean. ;)
