Sorry if this has been discussed to death already... but did anyone catch the OUATITW homage at the beginning of David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence"?  (Either a homage or a rip-off or a big ass coincidence, anyway...)

Saw the film...where is the homage? The only thing I can think of is that everything was silent for a good two minutes in the beginning of "History of violence".

You're talking about the shooting of the little kid, right? Yeah, I noticed.

you know I faintly remember me thinking about "Once Upon A Time in The West" while watching that scene in HOV(which of course killing the kid was off screen) and I remember a woman behind me give out a pretty big gasp, and i thought to myself...

"wow! Nothing has changed since the sixties has it? Kiling kids is still not part of the norm for movie going audiences"

Yeah, the "homage" (I assume) was at the end of that loooong quiet first scene, when one of the killers is in the office with the dead folks, and a little girl comes into the office.  The killer puts a finger to his lips, pulls his gun and aims it at her (pointing to the end of the frame, not at the camera) and at the moment the gun goes off the film cuts to a different little girl waking up screaming.  Not exactly the same as OUATITW, but I figure an established filmmaker like Cronenberg HAS to be familiar with Leone, so it couldn't just be a coincidence... anyway it was a little thing but every time I see a Leone homage in a new film I go completely nuts (you should've seen me when I first saw the Kill Bills)

When I watched it I also got the feeling that Cronenberg is doing a nice hommage (verbal silence and crickets on the soundtrack, the killing of the kid etc.). Because of that I checked out Cronenberg's audio commentary but he does not mention anything. Mybe its really just a coincidence or Cronenberg was unknowingly quoting. I mean by that: He watched OUATITW some years ago and shooting a similar scene he had just the feeling he should shoot it this way -  without consciously remembering OUATITW. By the way: V for Vendetta had also a definitve Leone-hommage: The masked hero V is confronting some bad guys and makes them empty their guns on him. After that... he drops his metal protection and kills them. Very much FAFOD...

AHOV was a lot better when it was called "Unforgiven". I really disliked AHOV, I didn't buy it as a drama, social commentary, satire, or a combination of the three.

It would have still sucked if it was called Unforgiven and Unforgiven (the Clint Eastwood movie) did suck too. :) :)

I've had enough of your preaching about the "suckiness" of Unforgiven.
