As for GF 2, I didn't really see the connection between the flashbacks and the current scenes [unless they were trying to show how Michael was different from his father, which I thought was already apparent from GF 1].

Yes, that was the purported intent of the flashback scenes: to contrast Michael and Vito.

btw, Coppola said that he had hoped to make a Godfather 4, which would have had a similar structure to Godfather 2: it would feature Vincent (Andy Garcia) as the new godfather, with flashbacks comparing him to Michael. (of course, GF 3 had ended similar to GF 1, with the old godfather dying and the new one taking his place; so now, GF 4 would follow GF 2).
But Mario Puzo died before the project could be done, and that was that.

Personally, as I mentioned previously, I was getting sick and tired of the movies constant references to each other. By the time they got to the third movie, it was like for every big scene, there had to be some reference or parallel to a scene from one of the previous movies (eg. the ceremony at the opening; the festa as a way to kill a big mafia guy; with the final revenge montage intercut with the opera, just like it was intercut with the communion in gf1, etc. etc. etc.) Of course, the third movie sucked ass for other reasons, but the constant need for reference and parallels was really getting on my nerves. So, if the fourth movie was gonna be a re-hashing once again, then it's a good thing it was never made.

There are three types of people in the world, my friend: those who can add, and those who can't.

You think you're better that I am?

Good sequels are hard to come by. If they do make GF 4 is should be because they genuinely think there's a way to continue or finish off the story, and not for making money or creating a masterpiece for the sake of creating one.
