We all know John Mallory makes his presence known to Juan by blasting dynamite in a far distance. I ask why? Why would he waste dynamite like that? What was he doing?
Was he perhaps blasting his way through the canyon? That doesnt seem possible...there seems to be a road there and their is no need to blast boulders out of the way.

Anybody have any idea why this is? Any specualtions?

I think he was excaping from a fight with the police. After all, he was a bandit wanted by the queen of UK herself, and the reward was 200 pounds- more than enough to motivate the mexican police to go after him.

yes but he was not known to be in mexico(by the authorities) until he killed the German and a few officers. The newspaper which he has in his bike is from Ireland.

That would have made Coburn's background even more historically innacurate, as there were only kings in Britain between 1901 and 1952.

I'm just joshin'. That Queen feels like she's been around forever... Easy mistake to make.

Yes it is my mistake I'm sorry.

Anyway John may have already committed some crimes in Mexico, or as dave jenkins said, was just practicing.

John was blasting for the mine owner Aschenbach, looking for silver. Then he was to report back to him at Lucanina. This is verifyed when Juan says he tricked Aschenbach and friends telling them the John had discovered silver, and they believing him walk straight into the trap.
