D.W. Griffith's Birth Of A Nation 1915 was on TCM tonight, lilian Gish & Raoul Walsh in the cast that I recognize, wow, a cavalry of KKK riding to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkuries", never knew the film was like that.

Some commentator said it was a recruiting tool for the KKK I can see why.

Jeez! you managed to sit through the whole thign without having prior engagements.

Little history on this film...

When the film was released Griffith was so badly criticized about the subject matter that felt he needed to do a film nobody would find offensive. He made "Intolerance" another four hour epic about Jesus Christ and others. The movie is mostly about the foolish way we oft certain people when they were only giving us love and peace. The film failed to rank in the dough(go figure) and bombed at the box office.

Same with Peckinpah movies. When he decides to have lots of violence everybody goes to see the picture but complains about it, but  when he leaves violence out of his films nobody goes to see it.

Although Intolerance is far better than Birth of a Nation, I found BoaN to be much more interesting. The last 15 minutes or so are laughably racist.

I haven't seen either but you have to watch Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl.
