I watched parts of OUATITW again last night, and there is no doubt in my mind that someone else dubbed Jack Elam's voice. I have seen Elam in numerous other films, including "High Noon", "Rio Lobo", and "Hannie Caulder", and the voice in OUATITW is most definitely not even close to his.  Come to think of it, Elam's voice here sounds exactly like the surly stagecoach driver killed by Juan's gang in the beginning of DYS.  But it's definitely not Elam.  Anyone else notice this?

Hadn't, but it makes complete sense. As all the dialog was post-synced, there was no way they were going to bring Elam in just to dub a few lines. The principals, of course (excepting Claudia), but a guy who gets gunned down in the first scene? Got to keep those production costs down.

Jacks voice sounds like his voice was dubbed by Nevil Brand.
It's like when they were looking for the actors to re-dub, the technition couldn't find Jacks name and said; "we need that really ugly actor that plays all the heavys" and wound up with Nevil.

He sounds like the guy who does the shotgun rider in DYS.

Hadn't noticed, but I'm willing to take your word for it. It probably wasn't worth the money to fly Elam in for the post-production looping.

BTW, shouldn't the title of this thread by something more like "Jack Elam is DUBBED by Someone Else"? As you well know, Leone used no direct sound on any of his pictures until DYS (where Steiger insisted on it), so everyone on OUATITW is dubbed. It's just that most of the stars got to dub themselves with their true voices.

Here is a link to a youtube video of Nevil Brand in the movie Killdozer.
Nevil can be heard at the 3:23 mark talking to Clint Walker.
His voice is identical to the OUATITW Jack Elam overdub.
