First up was the best, Rio Conchos 1964 Dir.  Gordon Douglas, with Richard Boone, Stuart Whitman, Anthony Franciosa, and Jim Browns first film role.

Starts off with an Apache Indian burial party, we see them carrying a body to the burial ground, then they place same on ground and begin to place rocks around it. In the bg. we see a rider dismount and grab his Winchester. The man then shoots every Apache dead then rides off.

We next see a troop of cavalry approach a burned out ranch and Catpain Haven (Whitman) and Sergeant Franklyn (Brown) enter the house to find a beligerant drunken Lassiter (Boone). They know he shot down the burial party but they are more interested in where he got the Winchester, which was from a stolen shipment.

Lassiter an ex Confederate Major tells them to go to hell so they arrest him and take him back to the fort. He's thrown into the jail with Mexican bandit Rodriguez (Franciosa). Eventually he makes a deal to lead Haven to Col. Pardee ( a great cameo by Edmund O'Brien) a renegade Confederate who is trying to build a new South on the Rio Conchos complete with a half built false front Southern mansion that is very surrealistic. Its a good story with a good score. It is very similar to "The Comancheros" but I like this one better. And it has a great ending, worth checking out.

Richard Boone is great in this, again he plays a tough hombre to the hilt.

I'd buy this DVD if it ever comes out, great scenery shot in Utah.

Next up was "the Streets of Laredo" (1949) William Holden, William Bendix, Macdonald Carey, Alfonso Bedoya, and Mona Freeman, it was more of the old Western style flick, but it was entertaining.

Lastly was "Gunsmoke" (1953) but I just can't get the hang of Audie Murphy, he's a runt compared to everyone else, and he reminds me of Gemma.

Rio Conchos was a really cool western. It was American but the style and violence was very spaghetti influenced. I like the wooden mansion under construction.

DJ, I am amazed that a cultist like you could have ever missed Rio Concho. That makes me wonder about the way old movies are programmed on american TV. Over here it was on a national channel 3 months ago.
Anyway, I agree about it. Haven't seen Laredo, and was never impressed by Murphy, not even in Red Badge of Courage.

Same here.  Why this movie hasn't been released on dvd, I'll never know with all the lousy movies that are out there.  cigar, what'd you think of Jim Brown making his acting debut?  I wouldn't call it acting so much as having an onscreen presence, but he's always cool.

Richard Boone's character in Rio Conchos reminded me of Clint's MWNN.

Hombre is my altime favorite AW, Richard Boone just oozes menace, I did a good review of it in other films, check it out. Newman's one liners were just begging for a jew's harp twang. Its that good, and its out on DVD. So if you want to get a good sample of Richard Boone badass, get it, now I'm just waiting for the "Tall T".  Cool
