How comes there isn`t any signifiicant footage of Lee Van Cleef riding his horse? Could it be that he was old and that`s why he wasn`t shown to be galloping around?

The scenes involving the bank robbery have the best horseriding I have seen from Clint Eastwood....and I was just wondering how comes we don`t see the Colonel riding as well.

I think since his auto accident he had problems riding. but then again in "The Big Gundown" he seems to be riding quite a bit.

You're right Cigar Joe, it was due to his auto accident. This was mentioned in Frayling's leone bio Something to do with Death.

LVC being old is a common misconception. One looks at him and sees a late 50's or 60 something year old man.
however that cant be further from the truth.
LVC had just hit the age of 40 when making FAFDM.

Van Cleef was an excellent rider: Check out 'Death Rides A Horse', 'Sabata' or 'Beyond The Law' for some examples of his skill. It is true, though, that stuntman/actor Romano Puppo often doubled for him in long shots. I think he was still quite ill (not his knees) at the time  FAFDM was shot, so maybe a lot of horseback time wasn't an option.. Compare how much more hale he looks a year later in GBU.

but there are enough scenes in his later movies where he shows a very refined control of his horse (I'm thinking here of the widow's ranch in Big Gundown, where he has the horse do alot of stopping, starting and sidestepping to get Cuchillo away from his abusers).

Don't know if you can call it a "later movie" as it was made the same year as GBU.
