Price Of Death(1972)

Just watched Price Of Death last night,from 1972 directed by Enzo Gicca Palli-his only sw.Gianni Garko plays a character called Silver who initially appears to be some sort of playboy  living it up on some estate surrounded by pretty girls but is talked into solving a murder mystery by a lawyer he owes a favour to.
    In a town called Appleby,a casino has been robbed and in the process a whore and a barman murdered. A local thug Chester Conway well played (with the sort of intensity we like to see) by Klaus Kinski is falsely accused  of the murders and is sentenced to hang by a Mickey Mouse trial.There has also been a vicious murder of a young girl by knifing just prior to the opening credits and Silver is approached by the girls parents to find the murderer,but his immediate objective is to solve the casino murders,and 30 minutes into the movie Silver the playboy has transformed into "Sartana the detective mode" and he looks exactly like that moustached hero we know and love circa Light The Fuse..Sartana Is Coming and  Have A Nice Funeral ...Sartana Will Pay.He wears the same black attire,big red tie and waistcoat and he even sports a toy gun hidded in an arm sleeve holster.Godamit he is Sartana!,he has that same manner,wit and cockiness about him.And just like the other 4 official Sartana there are twists and turns,red herrings aplenty and even the kooky old Chinese coffin maker resembles in character the maker from the original Parolini film.In many places the percussive guitar accompaniment and bluesy Hammond organ are reminiscent of the same movie.Very strangely i noticed a wanted poster pinned just outside of the sheriffs office sporting the visage of the Grand Full character(played by Piero Lulli) from Light The Fuse
   Garko of course originally played a character called Sartana in Blood At Sundown but this psychopathic type role bears no relation to the later one.Theres also another sw (on my to watch pile) called And Sartana Killed Them All but having already viewed the trailer this ain't the same guy either-but Silver most definately is Sartana,and Price Of Death makes for a very good un-official entry in the series,very similar in style,not up to the classic original or the 3rd and 4th ones,but i'd say at least as good as I Am Sartana Your Angel Of Death.
Now can we please have a decent Wildeast widescreen dvd release?

I saw this last night,and as i suspected this really has nothing to do with the Parolini/Carmineo Sartana series in terms of Garko's character or the films style but still its a quite entertaining western,probably Garko's weakest,but proof that he never starred in a bad sw.
   Garko with the brown suede jacket with tassles resembles Buffalo Bill more than the cool Col.Mortimer/Sabata like attire of the official Sartana's and lacks that larger than life confidence of the genuine article.In fact this is more of a buddy movie,and with Sartana's less than trustworthy partner he's on the trail of a stolen $100,000 though he picks up on the way a  girlfriend who turns out to be less than honest herself. Sartana and his buddy(both wanted men) are pursued relentlessly by lawmen -as the money switches from one bad guy to another in this good adventure with plenty of action and gun play.And a reasonable musical score too
Check out the official Sartanas first but if you are anything of a Garko fan,don't discount this movie!

Seen everything except for "Price of Death" which I plan on rectifying soon.

All his stuff ranges from excellent to good except for "Blood at Sundown" which to me is rubbish. The first twenty minutes looks like this will be a classic and then what is so sweet turns so sour.

His Sartana films are the best out of his sw filmography (to me). The best of his non- sartana profile is "Vengeance is mine". The companion film to VIM , 10,000 blood money, is good but not up to par with it's superior sibling.
"Coward's dont pray" is a close second in the best non-sartana catergory.


And yes Banjo...I'm one of the few who does enjoy the universally derided "Bad Man's River". I see it for what it is...a silly border line slapstick comedy.

I've never said i didn't enjoy Bad Mans River but it is a crap film,but i've got a pristine widescreen dvd on its way (hopefully very soon   ) so i may change my mind
 The original Parolini Sartana is my personal favourite Garko film,an absolute classic on par with Leones,Corbucci's and Sollima's best. 
    Below this Carmineo directed sw's are my favourites and tend to get played alot in my household-Garko comes over as very likeable and cool in those light-hearted James Bond inspired movies,and i'm not so keen on him (though still good)in the straighter roles.Certainly i wasn't as impressed with Garko playing Django in $10,000 as i was with Terence Hill in Viva Django.But admitedly i've only seen most of these non-Carmineo sw's just the once which i plan to rectify asap. 
    When i go through these again i'll list them all in an order of preference with percentage ratings

Very true! Not to be missed. nothing special but very entertaining even though I think things get a little farcical towards the end.

I'll review this after my "My name is Pecos" (or before maybe) review on my "excellent sw thread".

Lawrence in the main role (.32 Caliber Killer and Winchester One of One Thousand being the former titles. In Winchester the character it is not Silver, though Lawrence investigates a murder).
At least a hard sex scene and a softer one were shot for this movie, pictures were published on an italian cult movie magazine a year ago.

Maybe I should attempt to watch this one again, but I found it very boring and more of a murder mystery than a western. But then, I wasn't expecting to see a whodunit type movie. I thought Kinski was wasted here as he is in a lot of his westerns (considering the productions couldn't afford him for very long).

I'm partial to Garko and Kinsky, that's why I give it a rating higher than I would if they were not part of it.

The German widescreen dvd is very good quality nonetheless.

The movie is mostly good for novelty purposes.
It's one of the few films where you actually get to see the back alleys hidden behind the buildings in Elios studio.
Apparently, it wasn't all back drops.
