many film critics declared in 1984 that it was a pity that OUATIA was presented at Cannes 'out of competition' because it  shoud have won the Golden Palm .

it would have been great... but not sure. In 1984, the movie that had the golden palm was "paris texas" by wim wenders: an other great great great movie. I prefer once upon a time in america, but i'm not sure it would have won the palm.

An other point is that Leone himself refused to show ouatia in competition since he has seen that there were "international pressions" in canne (i'm not sure you will anderstand what i'm trying to explain...).

Yes I do ,
I  did'nt know this Leone's opinion about Cannes and others competitions but surely he was right ..

About OUATIA I agree with you because jury and critics was not ready in 1984 to admit for the first time that Sergio was a great and serious Director.

But many French critics already were very enthusiastics and one of them in the same article evoked about him :

Les Anges aux figures sales (I have forgotten the original U.S title)
