Director Seijun Suzuki beat Leone to remaking Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" by one full year...

I have yet to see the flick but I plan to watch it tonight, if not tomorrow.

I'll let you know what it is like...

in the mean time feel free to give input on the film if you have seen it.

Brilliant film...stylish..wild...inventive...Suzuki's breakout movie from what were considered "B" movies....check out "Tokyo Drifter" ...& "Branded To Kill" also by Suzuki..a true maverick & innovator.
Jo Shishido is great in this...the man with with the "chipmunk" cheeks...great score, too.

Spoiler

I love it! Has one of the funniest scene in gangster film history, and I think you all know, when they shove him into the car and comes out the other side instead of staying inside, which I thought was genius.

Spoiler end

I think it's probably the best Yojimbo remake, I haven't seen Last Man Standing though. I really enjoyed it. It's not boring or even predictable! Even has it's own twists on the story. Very flashy and stylistic. Suzuki's first unique film where his touch comes into full bloom. Tokyo Drifter is a bit better and just as fun. Man, I love the use of color!

My, you guys are talking about Seijun Suzuki? He is probably one of the most eccentric directors in Japan. As a result of making strange films continuously, he was kicked out of the studio and he could not make films for many years. He is almost like Japanese version of Bunuel.

I admire his surrealistic aesthetics. Not many people do in Japan. In my opinion, his best work is "Fighting Elegy." If you talk about a copy of "Yojimbo," see the fighting scene in this film. Likeness of the composition is unmistakable. But the film itself is a coming-of-age story. Adoration for machismo is told with a great sense of humor. If you talk about Seijun, you gotta see this.

I never put much thought into Fighting Elegy, I'll check it out.

How is Story of a Prostitute and Gate of Flesh?

They are good too. In Story of Prostitute, I was shocked to see the heroin running through falling bombs for her lover. She is tougher than Scarlet Ohara.

Gate of Flesh, a story of post WWII prostitutes told in eccentric color. A real Seijun touch. But comparing to Fighting Elegy, it's a little superficial to me.

I know I said I would get back to this but I saw about an hour in and I must say it is quite a bore.

I thought the wacky comedy elements were too much.
The best scene is when the hero is captured by mobsters and is placed in back of the car but just gets out in the other side. Grin

That and the set design is incredible.

If you are not Seijuned-out after "Tokyo Drifter", try to see "Fighting Elegy" also. You can feel Japanese adolescent sentiment in it.

You mean "Youth of the Beast"? Can't say, I'm afraid. I have not seen that yet  Embarrassed. But it was highly acclaimed among Japanese critics. I'd like to see it sometime.

"Tokyo Drifter" is just like a pre-MTV music video. In fact, it was called musical action. You can sing along.

It's not as great as other Seijun films. But it's a fun film. Whacky set and colors as usual. And oh, those lines spoken by the hero. I'm not sure how they are translated in English.
