I'm not sure how they are translated in English.

Most of the quick quips in the english subtitles were very charming and funny (for YOTB) so I dont think the translation is too off.

I just hope you don't find those lines too corny.

No they were top notch. I just thought some of the visual gags were  a bit out of place.

But then again...I was expecting a darker film.

Seijun was not really serious about action or noirish films. For him, the world of outlaws was just a vehicle to create a Kabuki-like esthetic world. That's why studio executives were confused and that made them decide to let him go.

Well he is certainly talented. Perhaps the next film I see of his (TD) I will expect his kind of filmmaking and like it.

I saw a lot of "Le Samourai" in the set design of YOTB.

When you see "Tokyo Drifter", don't expect a serious kick-ass action.

"Branded to Kill" is probably one of his most bizarre gangster films.

Besides "Fighting Elegy", another of my favorite Seijun film is "Tattooed Life (awful English title)". This film was very successful because his kabuki-like style and the subject (yakuza) were perfectly matched. If you have a chance, try to see this too.

Well, roughly "Life of a Tattooed Man". Not too far from the other English title, but it doesn't sound good in English to me. The film itself is really good. The climax  scene is remarkable. Seijun's style worked the best in this film.

Rewatched this and liked it much better than the first time.
Perhaps because I knew what I was in for.

Guess I have to give Tokyo Drifter another shot.

This is now my favorite Suzuki (although I haven't really seen all that many).

Tokyo Drifter is much better the second time around, but pales to Branded to Kill, which is my favorite. 'Branded' and Youth of the Beast are two of my favorite 25-30 movies or so.

I also really like Fighting Elegy and Gate of Flesh, but they might be too outlandish and quirky for you guys. Underworld Beauty was solid but nothing essential outside of its strong third act. Stay away from Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell Bastards.

I like how Suzuki handles action scenes.
Mostly everything is in the master with few close ups or inserts.
This style makes the viewer pay more attention to what each character has in his hand.

Yeah. Chaos within a frame > chaotic framing. Everytime.

I don't know about my favorite but I'd give this a "8" or "9" out of "10".
