There's about another 45 minutes or so of footage that still exists that the producers pressured Leone to cut from the film. As you know Leone did not film with sound so the extra footage hasn't been dubbed.

In an interview one of Leone's daughters has said yesterday that those 40 minutes are being currently under restoration and will be released in the near future, though they would like the event to happen in a big festival with an introduction by some big name like Tarantino:

http://www.repubblica.it/2006/09/sezioni/spettacoli_e_cultura/cinema/venezia/il-leone-restaurato/il-leone-restaurato/il-leone-restaurato.html

She also says that they won't be re-edited into the known italian movie version which is as his father intended it to be (so it wasn't the producers who imposed the cuts: true?) I don't know and don't care either way as I don't like the movie, still I would have liked to ask her how come that, as she likes to appear so intent preserving the integrity of his father's work, she and her family let the italian version of the movie be re-dubbed for the dvd release. Clowns...

Do I understand you right? The missing 40 minutes will be restored to the English-language version, but not the one/ones with Italian dubbing?

I'm gonna be a plebian and say that I don't NEED the extra forty minutes to like the film!  Maybe give the extra scenes as a special feature, but there's no reason to make the movie even longer.  The current version is a masterpiece, and I can't imagine the missing material would add to much except maybe as curios.  (Yeah, yeah, "it was Leone's intent", whatever.  But I'm drawing the line at four and a half f-ing hours for a film.)

A rather arbitrary line, at that. Why shouldn't it be 5, 6, 7 hours long? Ever heard of a mini-series? A director, especially a genius like SL, should be given all the time he requires. Let Sergio be Sergio, I say.

Even if the additional footage does nothing in terms of plot, it will certainly affect the pacing of the film. And pacing is one of the things SL's films are particularly known for.

THATS AWESOME.But i cant read it.Could some1 translate it?

Here you go:

- "Who was Sergio Leone for you?"
- Raffaella Leone: "A  father whom I loved dearly. And so did he. An authoritarian figure, but in a strange way: he didn't impose anything, but he lead you where he  wanted you to go. Like he did with his actors, who always respected his authority"

- "And how was it for you children to live with a movie director as a father?"
- RL: "For us it was normal to have movie stars at home, great men like Clint Eastwood. I know my father said the famous phrase that Clint had just two expressions: one with his hat on and one without. But I believe that since he has worked with him for so long, he knew there was something special about him. So it was just a joke, my father had a great sense of humour. Anyway Clint showed how talentful he was by becoming a great director himself."

- "What was Leone's favourite movie among his own movies?"
RL: "The next one he would have shot, for sure. But I believe the most important one for him was OUTIA. He suffered for this movie and it took him a long time to make it. There was a lot about himself in this movie, even in the female roles."

- "And the one he loved the least?"
RL: "DYS, at least before he started shooting it. He didn't want to shoot it, just to be the producer. Then he was somehow forced to do it, the cast was ready. In truth, already then he was after OUTIA".

- "And you are now working on OUTIA, isnt'it?"
- RL: "Yes, in close cooperation with SKY  we want to restore 40 minutes of scenes we have found, for example a scene with Louise Fletcher, who won an Oscar for "One flew over the cuckoo's nest"; this scene disappeared in the final cut. But let's be clear: we will not re-edit the movie, which will be left as my father wanted it. We would like to show however, for instance at a film festival, these interesting scenes never seen before. Maybe even introduced by somebody important like Quentin Tarantino".

- "Now however it's time for FFDM..."
- RL: Yes, also because this film badly needed to be restored. We wanted it to be shown in the Sala Grande theatre and we made it!"

- "Just one last curiosity: which was the female role in his movies that your father liked best?"
- RL: "Claudia Cardinale in OUTIW".

Editor's note: the restored version of FFDM was actually not only screened at the Venice Film Festival, but it was also shown a few days ago on SKY in Italy in High Definition. But since yours truly does not own an HD decoder, I was unable to see it.
I doubt however that the restored version includes previously unseen scenes,  I think it was just a matter of restoring the movie.

The longer the better (it's what my girlfriend says all the time!).

The same doesn't apply to GBU though...some of the extra scenes put back into the American release were rather pointless.
