AnyDVD doesn't work quite like I thought. A closer examination and apparently it removes the region block from a dvd only while it's in the computer, and you then have to burn it to a different disc for it to be region free. That's ok, though, because my friend uses this program to burn DVD's and he'll just do that with my copy of Fistful of Dynamite. I'm so excited.

Okay, I decided to throw a  few sentences together to please the Firecracker:

Giu la Testa most definitely should be compared to the rest of Leone's final four masterpieces (that's right, Groggy, it should be). It was as entertaining as The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, as well-acted as Once Upon a Time in the West, and has characters as complex as Leone's later Once Upon a Time in America, and does everything BUT disappoint. Whereas in OUATITW the theme was the death of the west, this has much larger themes and is set against the backdrop of the transition between the frontier (like in OUATITW) and urbanization (like in OUATIA). As Christopher Frayling often points out, this film has much more maturity than the Dollars films. "The violence and double-crosses have much greater consequences than in his previous films. People die. Families die." And, as he says "This is the first Leone film where there's a real relationship between two people. Where they become dependent upon each other, and become deeper human beings because of each other."

Anyway, now that we've established how different it is, let's move on to the film itself. It's beyond words really. As opposed to other Zapata Westerns, it's main theme is not all about the preachy politics, but about how, when it comes to revolution, "Duck." It's better not to get involved, and family is more important. Revolution should be avoided at all costs, and most certainly should not be sought after. And, as I said before, it delivers these heavy themes while maintaining a very high entertainment value. Rod Steiger delivers a MARVELOUS performance as Juan Miranda, a Mexican peasant who loves his family, and couldn't care less about "the revolutions." That is, until he meets Coburn's character John (or Sean?) H. Mallory, who is drawn to the simplicity of Juan's life, and realizes there is much more to life than revolution.

10/10

It is on par with GBU!

P.S. Best explosions in any movie ever made.

I know, I just remember you and firecracker getting in an argument about it just recently. Other than this, I agree with your opinions on a TON of films.

Yeah, Groggy, you are right about a lot of things, so it is surprising you don't get DYS.

Silenzio, well put. The only thing I'd add is that the theme of friendship and betrayal comes to the fore for the first time in this film. The theme had always been present in the earlier Leones, but it really stands out here. And it prepares the viewer for its even greater development in OUATIA.
